Activity 4 Know Me Better: Jed Enjelo C. Pabe STEM 12 A

This document discusses several key properties of water through examples and questions. It explains that water has a higher boiling point than ethanol due to stronger hydrogen bonding. It shows water absorbing heat through its high heat of vaporization property. Additionally, it describes how ice floats due to having a lower density than water, and how sweating cools the body by evaporating heat from the skin. Overall, the document examines water's cohesive, adhesive, and thermal properties.

ACTIVITY 4
Know Me Better
Study the picture and be able to determine the property of water shown in the picture.

1.

a. Why does water has high boiling point than ethanol?

The hydrogen bonding in water is substantially stronger than the ethanol hydrogen bond..

b. What property of water is shown in the picture?

High heat of vaporization

2.
a. Which object will be heated slower? Why?
Because land/dirt warms faster than water, water will take longer to warm.

b. Which will release heat slower? Why?

Because water has a higher specific heat than land, it will release heat more slowly.

c. What property is exhibited by the water?

Heat of Vaporization

3. Ice floats

a. Why does the ice float?

Ice has a lower density than water. Because the water is heavier than the ice, it displaces it, causing the ice to float
to the top.

b. How will you describe the molecular structure of water in solid form?
Water molecules in solid form are closely bound together. Ice is a crystalline substancea type of
water. Ice is hexagonal in shape.
4.

Why is after sweating you feel cooler?

It's a result of homeostasis. When the body's homeostasis is disrupted
by higher temperature, perspiration occurs to restore normal body temperature. Sweating causes you to feel cold
because the heat vaporizes.

5.

a. How does colored water change the color of the flower?

The flower absorbs the colored water and functions as an elevator
brings the dyed water all the way up the stem to the flower petals.
b. What are properties involved in this action?
This is possible because water adheres to itself (cohesion) and the tubes in the plant stem
are extremely small.
