PRACTICE

Question 1
Draw block diagram of a generic RF transceiver. Describe the function of each block.

Question 2
Draw block diagram and spectrum in each step of an Image Reject Reciever.
Draw block diagram of dual downconversion receiver and explain each step.
Draw bloc diagram of sliding IF receiver and explain.
Question 3
An amplifier senses a sinusoidal signal and delivers a power of 1 dBm to a load resistance of 50 Ω. Determine the peak-to-
peak voltage swing across the load.

Question 4

Figure 1: An analog multiplier.

An analog multiplier “mixes” its two inputs below, ideally producing y(t) = k.x1(t).x2(t), where k is a constant.
Assume x1(t) = A1cos ω1t and x2(t) = A2cos ω2t. If the input port sensing x2(t) suffers from third-order nonlinearity,
determine the output frequency components. (Manipulation steps are required.)
Question 5
Given an amplifier with input x(t) = 5cos((2πft) (V), the non-linear output is y(t) = α1.x(t) + α2.x2(t) + α1.x3(t). Input and
output impedance are 50Ω.
a. α1= 10 (times), 1dB-compression point level is -25dBm, α3= ?
b. Calculate IIP3 ?
c. Put this amplifier in serie with a mixer that has IIP3 = 5dBm. Calculate the IIP3 of the system. Give conclusion
from the result.
Question 6
A GSM receiver requires a minimum SNR of 12 dB and has a channel bandwidth of 200 kHz. A wireless LAN receiver, on
the other hand, specifies a minimum SNR of 23 dB and has a channel bandwidth of 20 MHz. Compare the sensitivities of
these two systems if both have an NF of 7 dB.
Question 7
A LNA is in series with a filter and a mixer, respectively. The LNA has a noise figure NF 1 = 2 dB and a voltage gain A1 =
20 dB, the filter has a loss figure L = 3 dB, and the mixer has a noise figure NF2 = 6 dB. Calculate the given system noise
figure.
Question 8
Design the matching network using L-section so as to transform RL = 50 Ω to 25 Ω at a center frequency of 2.5 GHz.
Question 10

Discuss the I/Q mismatch problem of the two given design.

Question 11
Plot the spectrum of Acos ωct - jA sinωct.
Question 12
Redesign the given Harley architecture receiver and plot the spectrum when ωim> ωc.

Question 13 Question 14
Plot the output of a QPSK modulator if the input bits are 00101101 and the carrier is VC cos(ωCt).

Suppose you have a portable DSBAM transmitter which needs to transmit an average power of 10 Watts in each sideband
when modulation depth m = 0.3. Assume that the transmitter is powered by a 12 Volt battery. Calculate the capacity of the
battery to power the transmitter for 2 hours. Discuss the result.
Question 15
Input signal amplitude and frequency of a FM circuit are 4V and 12kHz, respectively. Frequency conversion factor
α=15kHz/V. Plot the spectrum and calculate bandwidth of FM output signal using Bessel coefficients and Carson’s rule.
Given carrier frequency fc= 100MHz.

Question 16

Figure 3

a. What is the function of this circuit ?
b. Given the input Vin = 10 sin (2πft) (V), f = 10 MHz, R = 4700 Ω, C = 47nF, calculate Vout.
c. What is the cut-off frequency of this circuit ?
d. Calculate the poles and zeros of this circuit.
