CHAPTER I
1.1 ABSTRACT
Although bike theft has always been a common issue, especially in urban areas, it increased during the
pandemic in a number of cities. The pandemic led to an unprecedented boom in bikes sales. The rising demand,
increase in ridership, and shortage of bikes nationwide among other factors, has likely contributed to a rise in
theft, according to Bike Index, a nonprofit organization and national bicycle registry. Novice cyclists who
picked up the habit recently or are relying more heavily on bikes for transportation may also be unaware of
the basics of bike security — especially in urban areas. As a solution, we came up to create an improved bicycle
lock alarm system with SMS which can detect unusual movement by using a motion sensor.
1.2 INTRODUCTION
Technology combines tools to encourage development, use, and information exchange, with the primary
goal of making tasks easier and solving many of humanity's problems. The Bike Locking System with SMS
Project is powered by an electronic circuit that includes an alarm-lock and SMS system. Apart from the SMS
alarm, this system has an alert feature when someone tries to steal your bike, and when the bike is stolen, it will
send a text message and a phone call to notify the bike owner. To avoid having our bike stolen, we need a
solution that enables prevent theft. We also install a screen indicator to see if the device's battery is low, so you
won't get a discharged battery. We want to make it easier to ride a bike than it is to ride a traditional one.
To protect bikes in the best way possible, an alarm system for bicycles could be a great solution. A bike
lock, complemented with a bike alarm is an effective way of stopping bike theft, as the alarm sound will warn
the surrounding area when a bike thief tries to steal the bike. A bike lock with an alarm provides great safety
and peace of mind since it attracts unwanted attention. Therefore, the sound of the alarm will most often scare
off any thieves if they try to steal the bike making the bike theft-proof [1]. Whether in administrative buildings,
production plants, public institutions, hospitals, commercial or private buildings, now more than ever security is
a top priority in society. A locking system or simultaneous locking facility is also very beneficial and
convenient for smaller properties and residential buildings [2]. Securing your bike when leaving it unattended is
a must-do if you expect it to be there when you return. If you commute by bike, it’s likely that you already own
a bike lock. If you don’t, you should go purchase one as soon as you’re done reading this article. Yes, it really is
that important. Other than providing security, bike locks act as theft deterrents. When given the option to steal
one of two identical bikes, thieves will always go after the unlocked one [3]. technology has been developing
rapidly. Various types of technology have been developed and provide a great deal of convenience in human
life activities, including security systems. Motorcycles, parked in a park or on the street, are at high risk of
being stolen. A security system for Motorcycles with SMS warning and GPS tracking that can prevent theft of a
motorcycle is needed. The research aimed to design a security system for motorcycle consisting of a SIM808

The bicycle is becoming increasingly popular as a healthier and more ecologically friendly means of
transportation. Cycling is simple to include into your daily routine by cycling to the store, park, school, or work.
With the growth in bicycle sales and usage, we have also seen an increase in bicycle thefts. According to the
FBI, bicycle theft accounted for 3.6 percent of all theft incidents in 2004, which translates to 250,000 stolen
bicycles every year. However, the National Crime Victimization Survey estimates that the number of incidents
of theft of or theft from bicycles was closer to 1.3 million in 2006. This implies that for every recorded crime,
The most apparent prevention is to secure your bike with an appropriate lock. So, the researchers came
up with the idea of making a bicycle lock with an alarm and an SMS system. Because criminals normally opt
for the easiest target, the odds of a bicycle being stolen with a less secure lock are higher. [5]

The magnitude of this project is to make commercial bicycle locks even more secure with the help of three
features, which are having an alarm system, SMS capability and Phone call. As a result of this innovation, there
is a greater chance that thieves will be caught in the act or will be apprehended. This project gives the owners an
emotional and financial benefit as it gives them assurance of their property, prevents its loss, and contributes to
society by reducing bicycle-theft cases. For the researchers, it can be a business opportunity when this
innovation reaches the commercial market. Also, the feedback from the project will help them to further
This study focuses on developing a system that improves the use of bicycle locks. A system that will
monitor the technology even without the owner when it happens to be stolen by someone. The materials that the
researcher will use for this project are cases that are placed under the seat, a system placed inside the case alarm
to prevent thieves, and a board for an SMS system to text you when the bike alarms. The researchers will
collectively identify and conduct tests on a variety of factors influencing the increased rate of bicycle theft.
The focus of this study is to determine how this research can be effective for making bicycle lock projects
with an alarm and SMS system as a feature by preventing and updating this system device that can provide
better help. This study will investigate different population areas of Bataan to collect their data for determining

instant somebody moves your bike, it starts blowing up your phone, making you look intriguingly mysterious as
you scramble out the door like Batman. The Cricket is a Bluetooth-enabled discus roughly an inch across those
fixes to the underside of your seat with a zip tie. An internal motion sensor detects when the bike is being
jostled – presumably by somebody with bad intentions, although a rider locking their bike next to yours or a
strong gust of wind could also set it off. It then pings your Apple device (no Android compatibility yet) with a
chirp, so you can go kick the thief's butt, or get your own butt kicked, depending on how it plays out. You could
also call the police, of course, and hope they get there quickly.[8]

I LOCK IT (2020)
To secure your bike more effectively against thieves, your smartphone can be a reliable companion.
Bike apps are little helpers for everyday life that you install on your smartphone. This allows you to monitor all
kinds of different metrics that give you more security and confidence. The bandwidth has now become very
extensive. Apps instantly alert you with a push message on your smartphone when someone tries to steal your
bike and trigger the alarm. This gives you the necessary security, even if you do not have your bike in sight. I
LOCK IT will automatically unlock for you as soon as you are in proximity to your bike. Your smartphone can
easily stay in your pocket. If someone tries to steal your bike, a 110 dB loud alarm will sound and inform you
on your smartphone. With I LOCK IT, you'll never have to worry about losing your key, because I LOCK IT
authenticates you through your smartphone or the optional, I LOCK IT key fob.[9]
During the 2010s’, everything got connected to the internet. Also, during this decade, most people
switched from browsing online through their PC to handling most things through their mobile device. It is such
a convenient way of doing many tasks. Motorcycle alarms are no exception. Owners crave and investigate the
possibility of having a (gsm) motorcycle alarm connected to their phone. Added comfort, security and tons of
other benefits push owners for solutions that help connect a motorcycle alarm with a phone app or the
smartphone in general. So, let’s try to understand why it is so great to have such a system to protect your
motorcycle, moped, scooter or just any property. This small and easy-to-hide device is the heart of the
Monimoto system. The waterproof casing is packed with a motion detector, a GPS tracker, and the hardware to
notify you if your bike is being messed with or moved. The better you hide it on your bike, the safer your bike
will be. The app will notify you if your Monimoto tracker detects movement. If your bike is stolen, your app
will reveal its location so your precious ride can be recovered as soon as possible. When you ride your
motorcycle, the key fob disarms the tracker. But when you’re away and the tracker detects movement, it will
notify you and activate its GPS tracker if it starts moving. From that point on, you’ll get constant updates on its
location. [10]
The Ellipse looks a lot like a standard U-lock, but it has locking mechanisms on both sides of the U,
meaning a thief must hack through both sides to get the lock to release. During that time, your phone alerts you
that someone is trying to steal the bike. That’s because the Ellipse has a Bluetooth radio with a built-in signal
booster, giving it a claimed range of 800 feet (though I’ll believe that when I test it). You won’t be able to
secure the bike and go very far, but you should get a notification if someone messes with the lock while you’re
Paul Norman (2021) So the Japanese-designed Alter Lock GPS bike tracking device feels like a clever
way to up your bike’s security during a cafe stop. Although it’s got “lock” in its name, it’s not a lock but an
alarm that detects if your bike is moved and sounds an alarm. It also sends an alert to your phone that something
is amiss. It’s a slim device, weighing just 46 grams, designed to fit under a bottle cage. Alter Lock has CFD
modelled airflow over the device to show that it won’t make your bike any less aero.
It comes with extra-long Trox mounting bolts that will fit through your cage and the mounting holes in your

SYNOPSIS:
When the bike is jostled, an inbuilt motion sensor detects it —though a rider locking their bike next to yours
may also set it off. It minimizes bike theft by notifying the owner if their bike has been tampered with or
moved. Most trackers are made up of a bike attachment and a phone app. The software allows the owner to
track the bike and even inform the authorities to where it is being stored. That is why investing in a good bike
GPS tracker may protect you from the worry and financial disturbance that might result. The above-mentioned
study sought to develop a motorbike security system comprised of a SIM808 GSM Module to send warning
messages and a GPS tracker to offer information in latitude and longitude coordinates to track the stolen
Y.C. Huang and T.S Huang (2017) developed a study by searching for extensive types of bicycle lock
structure and device and sorting and analyzing various locking means, a new type of anti-theft device for
bicycles. In the process, consideration was given to locking methods in different situations and the purpose of
increased handiness and reduced mechanical complexity; hence, compared with other products, the design

installed on the top tube, seat tube or the fork of any kind of bicycle and able to lock the bicycle wheel itself as
top tube, such that any damage to the lock will also damage the bicycle, thus making it less liable to theft. Also,
the locking methods include locking the wheel of the bicycle itself as well as locking with a utility pole or bike
According to Ismail et al (2021), a study was developed using Arduino Nano that act as main brain of
this system. Together with the android application that was developed use to allowed user to unlock and lock
their bicycle easily by tapping the green and red button inside the application. A high security should be applied
because this bicycle lock can be hack or stolen by anyone. Therefore, this project has an addition of vibration
sensor and alarm to prevent theft from happening. To compare this study with top keyless bicycle company
maker is far way to achieved but it is something that is not impossible to do. In this study, the objective that had
to develop a keyless way to secure the bicycle lock. The software development of the keyless bicycle lock is to
be based on simple yet powerful programming languages such as Arduino coding or Raspberry Pi 3 processor
coding. The Bluetooth in the lock system is to be connected with the mobile phone Bluetooth software for the
Another study from van Lierop, D., Grimsrud, M., & El-Geneidy, A. (2015) stated that their research
has attempted to understand bicycle theft by asking 1) who are the victims of bicycle theft; 2) where does
bicycle theft occur most frequently, and where is it perceived to occur most frequently; 3) what kind of bicycles
and bicycle parts are most commonly stolen; 4) how are bicycles and bicycle parts most commonly stolen; and
5) when are bicycles most likely to be stolen. About understanding who the victims of bicycle theft are, the
most striking finding is that over 50% of participants were subjected to a bicycle theft in their lifetime as active
cyclists. The logit model makes clear that the monetary value of a bicycle, lock type, and a cyclist’s gender
influence his or her likeliness to have been a victim of bicycle theft. Thematic maps make clear where thefts
occur, and where thefts are perceived to occur. The maps illustrate that theft rates are, and are perceived to be,
most prominent in the downtown police districts. However, there appears to be a disconnect between actual and
perceived theft locations in many regions, which suggests that some cyclists might underestimate risk of theft in
their own neighborhoods. Most theft victims had only once lost a bicycle to theft, but nearly 20% had been
victims three times or more. Theft of bicycle parts is about half as frequent overall but displays a similar pattern
of multiple theft victims. Concerning what kinds of bicycles are mostly commonly stolen, the results show that
the most frequently stolen bicycles are new bicycles, which at the time of the theft were valued between $150
and $500. Many more used bicycles priced at under $150 were stolen compared to new bicycles in the same
price range. Although cyclists are generally aware of how parts were stolen from their bicycles, how the most
recent theft of a whole bicycle occurred is unknown for most victims. With respect to understanding when
bicycles are most likely to be stolen, theft evidently occurs most frequently in months when more bicycles are
being used. Because most thefts occur during the day, when bicycles are likely to be parked at a destination
other than the rider’s home and presumably visible to passers-by, there is substantial potential for theft
reduction by improved bicycle parking facility provision and locking habits. Pertaining to bicycle parking
facilities, respondents are largely unsatisfied with current parking facility security and availability at most
destinations, and rack types such as racks 2, 3, and 6, in figure 4 are perceived as being more secure than others.
22 In future studies it would be interesting to track changes in theft frequency from year to year. In the current
study, over a quarter of both complete bicycle thefts and partial bicycle thefts were reported to have occurred in
2011 and 2012, despite theft events being mentioned as long ago as 1990 or earlier. However, because
respondents only detailed the most recent theft (as well as noting the number of thefts they have experienced),
previous incidents for victims of multiple thefts are not dated and underrepresented. Additionally, people who
had been bicycle theft victims in Montreal in the distant past are more likely than recent local victims to have
since moved out of the region and not filled out the survey. Subsequent bicycle theft surveys might benefit by
including questions for timing of all thefts, rather than just the most recent, as well as amount of time having
lived in the chosen region and at the current address. Future research should also include putting the collected
data to more extensive use, by modeling the relationships between the characteristics of the victims, as well the
observed differences between the reported and perceived locations of bicycle theft. This research, based on a
survey of cyclists in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, provides new insights into bicycle theft. The main findings
from this study can not only be useful to better understand and ultimately decrease bicycle theft in Montreal, but
can also be beneficial for cyclists, police, and policy makers in any city aiming to decrease bicycle theft. The
creation of urban spaces that encourage cycling and discourage theft nurtures Montreal’s cycling culture and
encourages the use of the preferred and sustainable transportation mode, working to reduce costly traffic
congestion and greenhouse gas emissions while contributing to an active, healthy population and workforce.
[14]
A case study of bicycle theft on the Washington DC Metrorail system using a Routine Activities and
Crime Pattern theory framework from Levy et al (2018) employs Routine Activities and Crime Pattern theories
to explore the factors that lead to increased risk of bike theft, focusing on Washington Metropolitan Transit
Authority Metrorail (Metro) property. Utilizing the Metro bike census and other data, we use negative binomial
regression analysis to model the relationship between bike thefts and various station- and neighborhood-level
risk factors that can either create or close off opportunities for bike thefts. The findings indicate that bike thefts
around Metro stations are positively influenced by the number of targets, as measured by the number of bikes
per station, and the presence of likely offenders, as measured by the volume of auto-related larcenies. Stations
that have greater guardianship, as measured by the number of nearby businesses, are less likely to experience
bike theft. The implications of these findings for theory, methodological considerations, and crime prevention
are discussed. We suggest that bike racks can be placed in locations with greater informal guardianship and
discuss ways our findings can inform traditional interventions such as bike locking campaigns.[13]
Mburu and Helbich (2016) examined in detail the influence of different urban facilities on place-specific
risk of bicycle theft. It constitutes the first incidence-based bicycle theft risk analysis, which also concurrently
assesses amenity-related and socioeconomic influences while adjusting for seasonal offending variation. In
tandem with the differences in offending behaviors and opportunities that set bicycle theft apart from other
crimes, the unique outcomes that were observed in this study contribute significant evidence to the literature on
victimization.
The findings also highlight the important contribution of urban facilities to crime statistics. Even after
controlling for seasonal variation and the principal socioeconomic area-based components, effects of urban land
use are important predictors of the risk of bicycle theft. Specifically, since the findings indicate that not all
facilities pose the same level of risk, risk-estimation models should depict the cumulative weighted influence of
nearby facilities. The results could also be used to support the promotion of attributes that are associated with a

2. Bicycle lock alarm with SMS system will help in increasing the security for bicycle theft
For a better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined in the context of this research.
Bike locking- a bicycle lock is a security mechanism intended to deter bicycle theft. It can be as simple as
locking one of the wheels or as complex as attaching the bicycle to a stationary object, such as a bike rack. The
size and security of locking devices varies, with the most secure being the largest, heaviest, and least portable.
Anti-theft- used to describe equipment that is intended to prevent something from being stolen
SMS- stands for Short Message Service and is commonly known as texting. It's a way to send text-only

3.1 METHODOLOGY
In this chapter, the researchers will use an experimental research technique and a variety of processes
and methodologies to reach conclusions about the study "Bicycle Lock Alarm System with SMS." It will go
through a series of tests to see if the objectives were met, as well as a review of the findings.
As stated in the first chapter, this research will be conducted in the field, allowing researchers to assess
the effectiveness of the system by using a bike alarm and lock to test the effectiveness of the security, as well as
Short Message Service (SMS) to notify the owner if the bike is being moved from where it was by unauthorized
person or a thief. We make it available to the public to put our product to the test and demonstrate that it is a
smart idea to safeguard your bicycle. By reviewing a range of publications, hypotheses, and studies on the issue,

microcontroller to process. When the vibration sensor detects motion, the alarm will activate, and the system
will contact and send an SMS to the owner, informing them that someone is attempting to steal the bike
programmed by SIM800L GSM module. The system is powered by a 19-volt rechargeable battery that keeps
the device running. We fitted an LED screen to monitor the voltage power and determine whether the battery
needs to be charged.
