What does a classroom that implements
UDL and intersectionality look like?

Universal Design for Learning


The practice of UDL is used in the classroom to
enhance student learning. It is made up of 3
components including engagement, representation
and action & expression. Each of these components
provides options for instructors to tailor their lessons
to the students.

Intersectionality
Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberle
Crenshaw (1989) that encourages us to
acknowledge how different aspects of a person's
culture in tandem, create who they are and the
experiences they have.

Some key points:


Our identities are the many
aspects of us that intersect
one another like roads
"Traffic" can be avoided by
actively fighting against
discrimination
"Identity isn't just a self
contained unit" -Crenshaw

Implementation
What does the implementation of UDL and intersectionality look like in
a secondary social studies classroom?

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING - Use relationships


with students to better understand different
backgrounds and identities to tailor the
course to their past and future experiences

STUDENT INTERESTS - Draw upon student


interests to spark engagement in course
content that will foster critical thinking

CONSIDER THE INDIVIDUAL - Remember that


everyone identifies with different groups in
society, but that we are not limited to one
social group, rather are a combination of all
aspects that individualizes us.
