Continuous Assessment test 4 (CA4), Full marks 25, Duration 1 hour

Answer all the questions

Group A (1×5=5)
Q1. Which of the followings is a better measure of ductility? Explain.
(a) Percent elongation
(b) Percent reduction in area of cross-section.
Q2. Which of the following figures correspond to a Statically Indeterminate Problem? Justify.

Q3. Give a situation where the body will have stress but no strain.
Q4. For any type of loading the deflection of a cantilever beam at the free end is
(a) Maximum (b) Minimum (c) depends on loading conditions (d) None of these
Q5. The edge view of the neutral surface of the deflected beam is called
(a) B-spline curve (b) Spatial curve (c) Elastic curve (d) None of these

Group B (5×4=20)
Q1. As shown in the figure below, two bars hang vertically under their own weight. They are of same length and same material.
Calculate the ratio of their elongations under self-weight.

At a temperature 100C, the rod fits exactly between unyielding walls at its two ends. Compute the maximum compressive stress
that will exist in the rod if the temperature is raised to 40 0C. Take E=2x1011Pa and α=12x10-6 per 0C.

Q2. Determine the deformation of the steel rod. Take:

E= 200 GPa, PB=500 kN, PC= 300 kN, PD= 200 kN
LAB= LBC= 300 mm, LCD= 400 mm
AAB= ABC= 600 mm2, ACD= 400 mm2

Q3. Calculate the deflection at point B of the simple supported beam AE (Take E = 200, GPa, I =105 mm4), due to the loading (P
= 500 N) as shown in the Figure given below using double integration method.
Q4. Calculate the deflection at point C of the simple supported beam AE shown in the Figure given below using area-moment
method (Take E = 200 GPa, I = .105 mm4).

P = 500 N
