Philosophy of Education – Artifact 1

1. Everyone has a duty to contribute to making our world a better place. One of the

ways we contribute is through our profession. Furthermore, I am gifted in teaching and

wish to contribute to the world by preparing and inspiring our children on a daily basis in

order to fulfill their dreams and answer their callings. The experience that inspired me to

become a teacher was my love for learning. I knew as young as eight that I wanted to

become a teacher. Growing up, I was always passionate about learning, and as early as

eight years old I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I got my initial inspiration from my

four-year-old cousin while playing school. While teaching her how to add, subtract and

multiply, her face lit up as she shouted, “I got it, I got it, I understand.” I had witnessed

someone's brain grasp a new concept for the first time i.e., multiplication. The feeling of

helping her gain understanding was incredible. My simple techniques were more than

enough. She was my first math student.

My personal skillset is the ability to make things simple enough for all learners, specially

in math. I strongly believe that everyone can learn math with practice. My field

observation confirmed that I already have everything it takes to be an excellent teacher.

Classroom management was a concern of mine. However, I was able to observe

different classroom management strategies. I also learned how teachers supported one

another by sharing lesson plans. It was interesting to hear stories from teachers about

their first-year experience and their current situation. With experience, it gets easier for

everyone, so I learned not to put too much pressure on myself. The best way to gain
experience is to become a substitute teacher and it will give me leverage in obtaining

employment.

2. Based on my current beliefs, I support a blended philosophical approach, centered

around Essentialism. Teachers are models and provide guidance. By offering core

courses in both conventional and non-conventional disciplines, students should be

taught the body of knowledge of our civilization. It is the responsibility of teachers to

decide what is most important to teach students so that a common culture can be

fostered among all Americans, while students may choose extracurriculars or

electives they are interested in. To assess students' progress, teachers rely on

achievement test scores. In addition to standardized tests,+ Garner's intelligence and

students' interest evaluation and testing are equally important so that students possess

basic skills, character, creativity, and critical thinking. Certain events in history have

influenced my outlook on which educational skillsets are vital. A few historical events

are critical thinking in the great depression, a character in demolishing African American

slavery and basic skills by giving all American to attend all school public school,

creativity in scientist Théophile Alajouanine discovery of the Arts increases brain

activity.

3. Creating activities to suit all learning styles will be the main strategy. Cooperative

learning activities emphasize the use of technology and peer-to-peer exchange. in order

for my students to have the same opportunity to learn, I need a culturally responsive

learning environment. Discussions, activities, and classroom decor can all contribute.
My main objective as a teacher is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be

productive citizens. From my experience, broad and or timed assessments aren’t

always effective for long-term learning. Having said that most of my tests will be open

books, a lot of drill and practice activities, and friendly discussions or writing. This will

relieve the pressure that comes with limited time and brings them back to gaining

knowledge. Teachers can assess students’ knowledge through interactive activities. As

well as, during in-class tutoring, weekly (free day), and the last 20 min of every class.

For students who complete beginning of quarter tests, extra credit will be offered. The

tests will allow me to evaluate their knowledge as a whole and as individuals, and better

assist them. Because student honesty regarding their knowledge and a judge-free

environment is essential, no points will be deducted for incorrect answers, and half-

answers or blank answers will be accepted if accompanied by a brief explanation of

what you do and don’t know about the test problem.

4. The qualities I need to move forward in my career are to gain my bachelor’s in

Secondary Education and later obtain my Master’s in Technology and Instructional

Design. While completing my degree I plan on becoming a substitute teacher to gain

experience. Lastly, continue to gain knowledge of the field by reading books, joining

educational societies, and networking with other educators.
