ACTION PLANNING PITSTOP

After reviewing this week’s content, take a few moments to consider how you can apply these
concepts to your life—in and out of school.

Use the questions below to guide you. Please note that this document can be printed and
filled out on paper or downloaded as a fillable PDF form.

CHECKING IN WITH YOUR EMOTIONS

What steps can you take now to get in the habit of checking in with your emotions? Here are
a few suggestions:

• You can set alarms on your phone that remind you to check in with your emotions at
different times throughout the day. Keeping track of how you feel and why you may be
experiencing these feelings can enhance your self-awareness and help you see
patterns over time.
• Before you enter a difficult moment or conversation, ask yourself how you’re feeling
and if that’s a helpful place to be.
• Try journaling or a brief reflection before work, on breaks, or on your way home.
• Use a concrete reminder, such as checking in with your feelings before entering the
school building, a classroom, or your home.

IMPROVING ACCURACY IN IDENTIFYING EMOTIONS

How can you improve your accuracy at identifying your emotions? Consider:

• Listening for times when you add “very” “so”, or “really” in front of another emotion
word (for example: “I am really excited to be here!”). What is the more specific word
for “really excited”? Thrilled? Overjoyed?
• Avoiding the terms “fine,” “okay,” or “good” when someone asks you how you are
doing.
• Finding ways to learn new emotion words over time through learning an “emotion
word a day,” reading more, or looking up words that you hear others use.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR FEELINGS

What are ways you can help yourself better understand your feelings?

• Ask yourself some basic questions: Where am I on the Mood Meter? How pleasant or
unpleasant do I feel? What’s my energy level? What word best describes my feeling?
What has led up to this feeling?
• Think about what you’re doing now or about to do. Ask yourself: Will how I’m feeling
support my goals for the situation or activity, or do I want to shift how I’m feeling?
