Can't wait to have a Sweet Shop breakfast next week!!!! WooHoo back in the
Ville !!

Lynne Lombardi 1971

I was in there the other day. I wished I had asked what someone was eating.
It’s clearly chicken over rice, but it looked like Turkey Delight on Buttered
Rice from Hicksville schools.

Ginny Grams Piccirilli 1973

I’ll take the Gyro over Greek salad, please.
Nancy Lauro Fariello 1972
I’ll take the Roast Beef Mozzarella on garlic hero. Oh and rice pudding for

I lived in the “Sweet Shop”. Always stop there when we're in NY. Always
delicious. Great Hicksville, Gem of a place.

Arlene Grace
Back in the ‘70s, my new husband had gone to the SS for breakfast. He
ordered hash and eggs. The cook couldn't get the hash out of the can, so he
opened a slit on the bottom and proceeded to blow the hash out of the can. I
thought my husband would explode telling me that story.

Kathleen Quinn Gorlitz

Thank You!

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts
of America. Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a
lengthy review process. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million youth.
Congratulations Tohan Manjrekar

Ellen Baldwin Mackey

Great job Rohan! As the mother of two Eagle Scouts I know how much time and planning goes into
making it to Eagle. Thank you for making the community a better place for kids (and adults) enjoy!!
Congratulations!

Kathy Heilig Jacovina

Congratulations!
Thanks so much! Going to take a walk over there tomorrow and take a look.

Chrissie Lee Verskry

That’s why you never say, “I was an Eagle Scout.” You always say, “I am an Eagle Scout.”
The tense makes sense. Earning the BSA’s top honor makes you a marked man for the rest of your life.
The title doesn’t go away when you turn 18. If anything, its significance strengthens.
Awesome Accomplishment Rohan

Hicksville Student's Art Wins National
Competition
Lily Wagner's piece placed first in the 2022 Congressional Arts
competition, and will be displayed at the Capitol.

Lily Wagner’s first-place artwork in this year’s Artistic Discovery

competition sponsored through the Congressional Institute. (Hicksville
School District)

HICKSVILLE, NY — Hicksville art student Lily Wagner was recently named

a Congressional Arts winner and received first-place recognition in the
nationwide competition organized through the Congressional Institute.
Additionally, Hicksville students Elizabeth Benitez, Amber Corbett and
Linda Chen each submitted pieces in this year's Artistic Discovery
competition.
Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000
high school students have participated in the visual art competition
through the Congressional Institute. Open only to high school students, the
goal is to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each
congressional district.
Students submit entries to their representative's office, and panels of
district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in
their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The
winning works are displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel, which
connects the U.S. Capitol to the Cannon House Office Building.

Flashback
You dreaded going to the Hicksville Library to do a report. I remember as a
Senior doing a report / presentation in front of the class on Brave New World
in Vetrano’s class when I didn’t read the book. I just made up this story and
when I paused someone else would mention something and I would add it to
the story. Kids were laughing either from my audacity or how funny the story
was. Back in 1975, no kidding, Vetrano gave me a “C”. Do you have a funny
story from class?
John Polli

Janet Knapp
We had a particularly rowdy English class my junior (or maybe sophomore)
year at Clarke. And our teacher, Mrs. Fronefield, was kind of like June
Cleaver (only not as cool). For some reason she thought it would be a good
idea for us to read Great Expectations aloud as a class. There was so much
cutting up and distraction in that class it took us 5 months to get through it.
By the end of the book, we couldn’t remember her name and half the class
was calling her “Miss Havisham” (a character from the book.)
My brother graduated in 1975... Rick Morse (shown above). I loved the
Hicksville Library!

Deborah Morse-Ackley Holy Trinity 1972

Chuck Karish 1966

I loved sitting in the smooth wood chairs in the library. The paper I did for
Mr. Vetrano was based on current events, the war in Laos, mostly from
newspapers. He gave me a good grade and said it could have been better if I'd
put in more of my own conclusions. Knowing how different my political
leanings were from his, I'm not so sure that would have helped.

Lorraine Jurgens Pioszak, Our Lady of Mercy, Syosset 1973

I loved going to the public library. My local library now is so poor in
comparison

Lynne Lombardi 1971

I had Mr. Vetrano three time. First was 8th grade history in junior high and
then he moved to HHS. World History in 10h and World Problems for one
semester in 12th

Nassau Housing Prices Skyrocket To New
Record Highs
Housing prices on Long Island keep climbing and setting new
record highs, boxing out many people from purchasing homes.

Alex Costello, Patch Staff

Wednesday, July 13, 2022

Home prices on Long Island continue to climb and set new record
highs. The median price in Nassau jumped more than $30,000 in
one month. (Patch Graphic)

LONG ISLAND, NY — Housing prices on Long Island once again hit new
record highs, with the median sales price in Nassau County skyrocketing
more than $30,000 in a month.
The pandemic set off a flurry of home buying, with prices climbing month
over month. Previous records were set last July, but Suffolk County broke
that record in April. In May, both Nassau and Suffolk counties set new
record highs.
Now, according to data from OneKey Multiple Listing Service, those records
have been broken yet again. The median sales price in Suffolk County in
June was $560,000 — up from the previous record of $555,000 the month
before. It's also a 10.8 percent increase over the same month last year.

In Nassau, the median sales price rocketed from $689,444 in May to a

whopping $720,000 in June, an increase of $30,556. That's an 11.8 percent
increase from the same time last year.

One reason for the steep increase in prices is a steep decrease in inventory.
In Suffolk, there were 1,547 homes sold last month, down 9.3 percent from
the same time a year ago. And in Nassau, there were 1,261 sales, which is a
14.5 percent drop from 2021.

Real estate is one of the few areas that hasn't been suffering since the
pandemic lockdowns ended in the spring of 2020. It set off a flurry of
buying across the Island. And with limited inventory, prices soared and
have led to many bidding wars. Buyers with money are paying above asking
price, boxing many people out of being able to purchase homes.

in "flagship" locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los
Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. The footprints of some of
these stores may increase by an additional 500 - 3,000 square feet during
the holiday season in order to offer "an even wider assortment of
products."

Marci and I are on a road trip and today we visited Hicksville - Hicksville,
OHIO. Thought the NY Hicksvillians might like to see what the sister "city"
looks like. We found it hiding amid miles and miles of corn and soy. Here
are a few pics.

Quiz: What Do You Know About USA
Geography?
By Anthony Beres

There are 50 states that make up the United States of

America. Taken collectively, these 50 states stretch over an
area of roughly 3,531,905 square miles. They range in size
from a little over 1,000 square miles to more than 665,000

Within that range, there is a bewildering variety of

geographies and climates – from scorching deserts to
tropical rainforests to freezing tundra to paradise islands. On
top of the natural features, there’s a rich collection of

Passages
Please add
James A. Geiseking Jr., class of 1965 to the In Memoriam list. I do not
have a date, but it was around 2012. I had no idea that this newsletter
existed. I was looking up the status of the Vietnam Memorial and found
HixNews. Do I just have to google each month, or do you send out Emails
when the issue is posted?
FYI, I was born in Hicksville, son on Rita Ofenloch Schlosser, Class of
1927. Rita was the daughter of Joseph A. Ofenloch, born 1887 in
Hicksville.

Bob…With sadness and regret I advise of the passing of my cousin

Art Lembke, in Annapolis, MD. Art graduated with the class of 1949. He
lived his whole childhood in Hicksville until joining the Navy in 1950. He
married Dorothea Kolb in 1952. Art and Dorothea returned to Long Island
after his 1953 discharge, but his occupation led him to Florida and Bowie,
MD as the Curtis Bay, MD Coast Card Station employed him using skills that
he learned in the Navy.
Art had found memories of growing up that he called "the Hamlet of
Hicksville," which was certainly true prior to 1950 for Hicksville was to
explode during our time in the '50s and '60s (my and Eileen's time) and the
rural nature often contrasted the Hicksville of my memory.
Art was a man of faith, who read the bible daily and continued to maintain
contact with the church of youth, Trinity Lutheran on Nicholai Street. He
appreciated and followed the Hicksville Newsletter and spoke often of you
Bob and the work you do to maintain it.
Sincerely

birth
Austin "Buddy" Bowles 1961
PS: Bob, I hope this is the proper way to notify you and the newsletter to have
Art added to the In Memoriam. I also added that Eileen and I second Art's
appreciation and all your arduous work as well as those who assist you in
publishing the newsletter each month.
