Assignment EEU104 20212022

This document provides instructions for an assignment with 3 questions about circuit analysis. Question 1 involves analyzing an RLC circuit with a current source and calculating various voltage and current properties. Question 2 requires plotting the current, voltage, power, and energy of the same circuit versus time. Question 3 concerns the analysis of a circuit with 2 capacitors and a switch, including calculating the initial and final energy stored in the capacitors. Students are instructed to show all work and include their name and student ID on each answer sheet.

Matrix No:

Instructions:

1. There are three questions and you are required to answer all of the questions.
2. Write down your name and matrix number on every answer sheet.
3. Only hand writing is allowed.

Question 1:

The independent current source in the circuit shown in Figure 1 generates zero current for t< 0 and a
pulse , 10te-5t for t > 0.

Figure 1
a. Draw the current waveform
b. At what instant of time is the current maximum?
c. Express the voltage across the terminals of the 100mH inductor as a function of time.
d. Draw the voltage waveform.
e. Are the voltage and the current at a maximum at the same time?
f. At what instant of time does the voltage change polarity?
g. Is there ever an instantaneous change in voltage across the inductor? Of so, at what time?

(42 marks)

Question 2:

Answer the following questions based on Figure 1.

a. Draw i,v, p and w versus time for circuit as shown in Figure 1.

Line up the plots vertically to allow assessment of each variable’s behaviour.

b. In what time interval is energy being stored in the inductor?

c. In what time interval is energy being extracted from the inductor?

d. What is the maximum energy stored in the inductor?

e. Why is there a sustained current in the inductor as the voltage approached zero?

(30 marks)

Question 3:

The initial voltage on C1 and C2 in the circuit shown Figure 2 have been established by sources not
shown. The switch is closed at t =0. Find:

a. Find v1(t), v2(t) and v(t) for t>=0 and i(t) for t>=0+.
b. Calculate the initial energy stored in the capacitors C1 and C2.
c. Determine how much energy is stored in the capacitors as t → ∞.
d. Show that the total energy delivered to the 250kΩ resistor is the difference between the
results obtained in (b) and (c).
