When Technology and Humanity Cross: Reflect On The Following Questions

1. The document discusses the relationship between technology and humanity. It argues that humans must embrace technology as a tool rather than see it as competition. Technology should be used to enhance employment opportunities rather than replace humans. 2. Teenagers can have a good life by being satisfied with their lives and relationships, understanding their feelings, participating in activities, and having good social connections and self-worth. Science and technology impact many aspects of modern life and have enabled developments but it is up to humans to decide how knowledge is applied. 3. Nanotechnology can impact society through improved manufacturing, water purification, energy systems, and physical enhancement, but also raises issues regarding privacy, surveillance, and potential environmental toxicity depending on its

When Technology and Humanity Cross

○ What do you think Gerd meant when he mentioned this "Don't fight
technology Work with it"?
i. The concept of technology replacing people is certainly unsettling,
especially as technology continues to exceed human capabilities.
The speaker says that as the world gets more technically
advanced, human beings must embrace technology. Technology's
job is to be a tool for employment, not a competition to the human
race.

2. Teens, Technology and Transformation

Reflect on the following questions:
○ What does it really mean to live a good life in today's technology-driven
environment?
i. We've been using technology to improve our lives for thousands of
years. Every development in hardware, from hammers to farming
equipment, has enhanced human lives. Today, we have an
abundance of resources that can be transported to any location on
the planet.

○ What qualifies as a good existence?

i. Having a good life entails living the life that liberates you. A life
which thrills and inspires you, that brings you happiness, joy, and a
feeling of purpose. But it also involves living a good life – one that
contributes to society rather than being entirely self-centered.

○ You as a teenager what are your indicators that you are living a good life?
i. Teens are the happiest when they are satisfied with their lives and
relationships, even if no one is happy all the time. It's also about
understanding your feelings, participating in different activities,
having good relationships and social relationships, finding meaning
in life and feeling good about yourself. It's about being respected,
growing independent of your parents or career, building your own
friendships and social life, and being valued as an individual.

3. Environmental impact of nanotechnology and its product

Reflect on the following questions:
○ Discuss the major impacts of nanotechnology on society
i. Improved manufacturing methods
ii. Water purification systems
iii. Energy systems
iv. Physical enhancement

○ Analyze the issue through the lenses of STS

i. The improvements in the field of electronics and computer memory
that nanotechnology makes possible the capacity of the
government to collect, store, and examine data. Developments in
nanotechnology, can therefore, be expected to significantly
increase the ability of governments to keep track of their citizens.

○ Critique the issue on its costs and benefits to society

i. There are certain negative effects of nanotechnology on the
environment in many ways, such as increased toxic pollution to the
environment due to the uncertain shape, size and chemical
composition of some products of nanotechnology. Toxic if inhaled
in the form of nanoparticles. The effects of inhaled nanoparticles
can include pneumonia and heart problems.

4. The Good Life

○ How do Science, Technology, and our environment help you achieve a
meaningful life? (10 sentences)
i. Science and technology impact us all, every day of the year, from
the minute we get up until we go to bed. Scientific knowledge has
had the potential to enhance people's lives on a wide range of
levels, from the mundane workings of our daily lives to global
challenges. Energy, conservation, agriculture, health,
transportation, communication, defense, economics, leisure, and
exploration are all influenced by science. It's difficult to not
emphasize how many facets of modern life are influenced by
scientific understanding.

We have complex gadgets such as vehicles, X-ray machines,

computers, and phones as a result of science. Even seemingly little
items that one would take for granted are, in reality, science-based
technology. Plastic sandwich bags, genetically engineered canola
oil wherein your fries were cooked, the ink in your ballpoint pen, an
ibuprofen tablet—all it's here because of science. It's crucial to
remember that science generates information about the world, but
it's up to humans to decide how that knowledge is used. As a result,
scientific knowledge enables the development of new technologies,
which in turn have a wide-ranging influence on society. Without the
understanding and technologies made possible by science, the
contemporary world would not be modern at all.
