Homework 3 (50 Points) : Lahore University of Management Sciences EE380 - Communication Systems Fall 2021

This document provides instructions for Homework 3 in the Communication Systems course at Lahore University of Management Sciences. It outlines 3 problems to solve involving concepts like DSB, AM, SSB modulation and filtering. Students are instructed to submit their solutions in a dropbox by October 22, 2021 and include a note certifying their own work. Problem 1 involves determining frequency spectra for signals modulated using DSB and AM. Problem 2 focuses on LSSB modulation including deriving time domain expressions and calculating bandwidth. Problem 3 has parts analyzing SSB modulation spectra, the USSB frequency range, deriving a USSB signal, and showing equivalence to DSB modulation.

EE380 – Communication Systems Fall 2021

Homework 3 (50 points)
Due Date: October 22, 2021 till 6 pm

Instructions: The assignment is individual assignment. You have to submit in the Dropbox placed
outside 9-248A. If you are unable to submit in the dropbox, you can upload it to the LMS dropbox before
the deadline and submit the hard copy later. No extension will be awarded.
Please make the following note on your solution: “I certify that I have neither received
nor given unpermitted aid on this homework assignment and that I have reported all such
incidents observed by me in which unpermitted aid is given.”

Problem 1: DSB and AM [10 points Consider a signal x(t) = sinc2 (400t). Consider a carrier frequency
f0 = 1 MHz.
(a) If the modulated signal xc (t) = 5(1 + 0.9x(t)) cos(2πf0 t). Determine and sketch the frequency spectrum
of xc (t).
(b) Suppose now that DSB-SC transmission is carried out with xc (t) = x(t) cos(2πf0 t) . Determine and
sketch the frequency spectrum of xc (t).
Problem 2: Single Side band modulation[20 points] Consider a signal x(t) = A cos(2π100t) +
2 cos(2π500t) is lower single side band (LSSB) modulated by filtering the DSB modulated signal xcDSB (t) =
x(t) cos(2πfc t) at a carrier frequency of 20 kHz.
(a) Assuming an ideal filter, determine and sketch the frequency spectrum of the LSSB modulated signal.
(b) Determine the time domain expressions for the LSSB modulated signal.
(c) Determine the total transmitted power of the LSSB modulated signal and the transmitted bandwidth.
(d) Suppose the transmitted signal with bandwidth determined in part(c), is filtered using a band pass filter
B
that has constraints because of the practical realizations of the filter i.e., 0.01 < fc < 0.1 and fc < 200β.
Note that β = 100 can be used without distortion of the signal. If a practical band pass filter is used, can
the transmission be made at the desired carrier frequency without distortion. Also determine the frequency
range that can be used that satisfies both constraints.
Problem 3: SSB Spectrum[20 (6+4+5+5) points] We know the time domain expression for the SSB
modulation is xc (t) = x(t) cos(ωc t) ∓ x̂(t) sin(ωc t) where x̂(t) is the Hilbert transform of the signal x(t).
(a) Take Fourier transform of the above equation to determine Xc (f ) in terms of X(f ). How does it compare
with the derivation performed in the class for SSB spectrum. Do we get the same result.
(b) For USSB signal, show that Xc (f ) is only non zero in the frequency range fc ≤ |f | ≤ fc + W
(c) Consider a signal x(t) = cos(2π300t) + 1/2 cos(2π900t). Determine the time domain expression for USSB
modulated signal xcSSB (t)

1
(d) Compute the Fourier transform of the xcSSB (t) signal from part(c) and show that it is identical to the
upper side band of DSB modulated signal xcDSB (t) = x(t) cos(2πfc t) where x(t) of part (c) is used.
