Difficulties and Coping Mechanism of Children from Broken Families

CHAPTER 1

Introduction
Family the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children (Merriam-
Webster). Omoruyi. (2014) Pointed out that family is the child’s first place of contact with the world. The child
as a result, acquires initial education and socialization from parents and other significant person and the family.
The family lays the psychological, moral, and spiritual foundation in the overall development of the child.
Structurally, family/homes is either broken or intact. A broken home in this context is one that is not structurally
intact, as a result of divorce, separation, death of one parent and illegitimacy. Psychological home condition
arises meanly from illegitimacy of children, the label of adopted child, broken homes, divorce and parental
deprivation. Such abnormal conditions of the home, a likely to have detrimental effect in school performance of
the child he asserts. (Anna Green, 2015) A broken family can negatively affect all domains of the child
development. The effects of a broken family on a child’s development depends on numerous factors, including
the age of the child at the time of parent’s separation, and on the personality and family relationships. Although
infants and young children’s may experience few negative developmental effects, older children and teenager
mean experience some problems in their social, emotional and educational functioning.
Having a dysfunctional family is the usual problem that Filipinos faced today. There are many problems
that we face, work, stress, relationship but the broken family is the worst thing that a Filipino well have a
problem with. Every year, more and more Filipinos seek a doctor’s help and more mental illness are being
recorded among Filipinos. Treatment for this kinds of situation is very expensive and therefore not every receive
proper medication, said by Romeo Enriquiz the President of PPA (Philippine Psychiatric Association),
(Crisostomo, 2012).
In North Cotabato, the researcher found out that the main reason of having a broken family was an
occurrence cause by third party, misunderstanding, alcoholism and financial problems. Sometimes money is the
primary cause of parent’s arguments, which will eventually lead to separation of the child’s parents.
The research, entitled; Difficulties and Coping Mechanism of Children from Broken Families, aims to
identify the experiences of children who belonged to a broken family. Furthermore, it enables the researcher to
know how it can affect their performances in their studies and to give better understanding on what they are
going through, the study could help them cope up with the situation.

Statement of the Problem


This study conducted to determine the Difficulties and Coping Mechanism of Children from Broken
Families.
Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of gender, age and course?
2. What are the difficulties of children from broken families?
3. What are the coping mechanism of children from broken families?
4. Is there a significant relationship between difficulties and coping mechanism?
5. Is there significant difference on difficulties and coping mechanism of children from broken families?

Significance of the study


The result of the study will help determine the needs, problem and the common factors that mostly to the
Difficulties and Coping Mechanism of children from broken families.
This study will be a great a help to the Guidance Counselor to determine the situation of the parents and
children for having a broken family and find the means to give solutions in a problem of children from broken
families. In addition, the result of the study will help discover the side reactions and petitions of the parents and
children regarding the broken families.
To the teachers it will help them better understand the problems that each student facing in their daily
lives and to determine a better solution or comfort for those students encountering who have been in burden and
advices from those who have suffered but found way to lessen the burden. It could also help the society to have
a better understanding on the norm who are suffering from broken family.
To the parents: A broken family has consequences for the parents that are not only brought on by
divorce but also by death. They experience grief and worry when they lose their children. Their mental suffering
has a negative impact on their physical wellbeing. Some parents experienced health problems and eventually
passed away. Every member of the family loses greatly when the family splits.
Moreover, this study would also benefit the student for it will increase their emotions about primary
reasons of their sadness so that they can prevent over thinking about their problem relate to their family.
This study focused on the Difficulties of Children from broken family. This will serve as a guide and
how it can affect their situation to their studies and to give better understanding on what they are going through
and in that way the study can help to cope up with the situation.

Scope and Delimitation


The respondents of the study were selected College of Education students of Cotabato Foundation
College of Science and Technology enrolled in School Year (SY) 2020-2021. The student profile includes sex,
age, and major. The research is limited only in determining reasons of students broken family as well as its
adverse effects.

and support to the concept and findings of the study.
Broken Family
The fundamental unit of society is the family. Over time, the family has undergone continuous change.
Family is regarded by the majority of Filipinos as the cornerstone of social life and is highly valued. According
to sociologists, the family consists of two parents who are in a committed relationship and who live their
children (Thompson, 2016)
