Teaching English to Young Learners

Module 2: Task 4

Discussion Board Topic: "Rules and Routines in My Classroom."

Country: ALBANIA
Grade (Age): G 1 (six to seven years old)
Class Size: MEDIUM – 26 students

1.

Managing the class for very young learners is a great challenge and at the same time interesting,
exciting, and it requires a lot of energy and patient. The kids are too young, innocent, and
lovely and the same time they are too eager to learn. They need a very good communication,
preparation, resources’ to be used and above all passion, professionalism, and being patient.

Actually I am teaching English first grade. There are 26 students, six to seven years old.17 of
them are girls and 9 boys. In general, the students are very obedient, cute, lovely and do not give
me any serious problem. But sometimes they forget that there are sitting in a class, some of them
are very active and being a bit spoiled at home, they sometimes forget school‘s rules.

There are some others, who lose concentration, look around, or drop things unintentionally.
There are some others who forget to bring books or to review at home.

2.

To manage better my young learner in the classroom, together with students we

have established some routines:

1. Establishing classroom rules at the beginning and claiming the best students of the
previous lesson and sticking a symbol to her/his note book.

Handwriting Poster M. Qosja

Seeing that sometimes the situation was a bit confused, together with students we
established rules in English lessons. I drew a poster with students’ help and stuck it
on the class walls.

Students had their own posters drawn as well and together with them we established
some rewards or positive stimulus for the best behaved students each week, writing
criteria’s of evaluation and showing on the class walls. Each week the best students
are claimed and rewarded. (stickers, drawings, thanking certificates or any symbol)

In that way they have a chance to learn new key words related to discipline. I even
send via classroom groups’ on WhatsApp songs, posters, worksheets related to
classroom rules.

notebooks.

the lesson, miming actions.
 Saying orally and by writing shortly the learning results at each lesson.
 Using flashcards or drawing on the board
 practicing short pauses and making students relax by singing songs alphabet
song or If you are happy , or watch a video, or practicing some physical

The suggestions of the videos or articles were very helpful. Everything is very
suitable. The techniques shown in videos and articles are very useful, informative and
quite useful for Albanian teachers and students. We are very grateful to OPEN for
giving us such an opportunity

4.

I really liked the idea of creating a job board. I think it will help students to be very
attentive, take responsibilities, or help other students to vividly participate in lesson. I will
practice this activity with my students. There all are nice activities and we would gladly use them
