NEWLY DIAGNOSED CASES

In January 2021, there were 890 confirmed HIV-positive individuals reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the
Philippines (HARP) and this comprised 1% of the (83,755) total diagnosed cases since January 1984. Moreover, 19% (172) had
clinical manifestations of advanced HIV infectiona at the time of testing.

Ninety-six percent (852) of the reported cases were male. Of the total male cases, 3% (24) reported their self-identityc as female
(transgender women) at the time of testing.

Further, more than half of the cases (53%, 468) were 25-34 years old at the time of diagnosis, 25% (220) were 15-24 years old,
20% (179) were 35-49 years old, 2% (21) were 50 years and older, and <1% (2) were less than 15 years old. The median age was
28 years old (age range: 3-70 years old).
Geographic Distribution Mode of Transmission (MOT)
The regions with the most number of newly reported cases Of the (890) total reported cases in January 2021, almost all
were NCR with 364 (41%) cases, CaLaBaRZon [4A] with 181 (97%, 859) were infected through sexual contact. Further,
(20%) cases, Central Luzon [3] with 120 (13%) cases, Central there were six (1%) cases that had acquired HIV through
Visayas [7] with 47 (5%) cases, and Ilocos Region [1] with 40 sharing of infected needles and one (<1%) child that had been
(4%) cases. These top 5 regions comprised 83% of the total infected through mother-to-child transmission. There were 24
number of cases in this period. [Figure 1] (2%) cases that had no data on MOT.

Anti-Retroviral Therapy PLHIV Alive on ARV Newly enrolled

In January 2021, there were 675 people with HIV who were
initiated on ART. The median CD4 of these patients upon
(as of Jan 2021) 675

presently on ART as of January 2021. Most (96%, 46,483) were
males. The age of reported cases ranged from 1 to 82 years
(median: 32 years old). Ninety-five percent were on the first

Pregnant Women with HIV

In January 2021, there were nine HIV positive women reported pregnant at the time of HIV+
diagnosis. Fifty-six percent (5) were from NCR, 22% (2) each from Central Luzon [3] and
Pregnant

CaLaBaRZon [4A]. The age of diagnosis ranged from 17 to 30 years old (median age: 21).

New Cases Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW)

Seventy-five Filipinos who worked overseas within the past five years, whether on land or at sea, were
of OFW
recently reported with HIV in January 2021. They comprised 8% of the total cases for this period. Of

these, 92% (69) were male.

Ninety-nine percent were infected through sexual contact (14 male-female sex, 37 male-male sex, 23 sex
with both males & femalesf). One (1%) case had no data on MOT. The age of diagnosis ranged from 21 to
55 years old (median age: 32).

Transactional Sex
In January 2021, 9% (84) of the newly diagnosed engaged in transactional sex. Ninety-nine percent (83) were male and aged
from 18-60 years old (median: 31 years old). Fifty-five percent (46) of the males reported paying for sex only, 24% (20) reported
accepting payment for sex only and 20% (17) engaged in both. Only one female aged 33 years old engaged in transactional sex
and had accepted payment for sex only.

In January 2021, 220 (25%) cases were among youth 15-24

Children (<10) & Adolescents (10-19)

There were 33 newly reported adolescents in January 2021. Of these, 3% (1) were 10-14 years old, 18% (6) were 15-17 years old,
and 79% (26) were 18-19 years old. All adolescents were infected through sexual contact (5 male-female sex, 18 male-male sex,
18 sex with both males & femalesf). Further, one child was diagnosed with HIV in this reporting period and had acquired HIV
through mother-to-child transmission.

Mortalityh
In January 2021, there were 63i reported deaths due to any cause among people with HIV. Total Reported Deathsi

Further, ten (16%) cases were 15-24 years old at the time of death, 30 (48%) were 25-34
years old, 19 (30%) were 35-49 years old and 4 (6%) were 50 years and older.

HIV/AIDS & ART REGISTRY OF THE PHILIPPINES

The HARP is the official record of total number of diagnoses (laboratory-confirmed), ART outcome status and deaths among people with HIV in the Philippines. All individuals in the registry are confirmed by the San Lazaro Hospital STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) which is
the HIV/AIDS National Reference Laboratory (NRL) and DOH Certified Rapid HIV Diagnostic Algorithm - rHIVda Confirmatory Laboratories (CrCLs). Confirmed HIV positive individuals were reported to the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau (EB) and recorded to HARP. ART figures are counts of HIV
positive adult and pediatric patients currently enrolled and accessing Antiretroviral (ARV) medication during the reporting period in 158 treatment hubs and primary HIV care treatment facilities that had reported in the HARP. This report did not include patients who have previously taken ARV
but have died, left the country, have been lost to follow-up and/or opted not to take ARV. Lost to follow-up is considered once a person have failed to visit a treatment facility more than 3 months after the expected date of ARV refill.
HARP is a passive surveillance system. Except for HIV confirmation by the NRL & CrCLs, all other data submitted to the HARP are secondary and cannot be verified. Hence, HARP cannot determine if an individual’s reported place of residence is where the person got infected, or where the
person lived after being infected, or where the person is presently living. This limitation has major implications on data interpretation. Readers are advised to interpret the data with caution and consider other sources of information before arriving at conclusions.
