7 Math Lab Activity 1 - Multiplication of Fractions

The document provides instructions for completing math virtual lab activities for Grade 7. It includes an example of Activity 1, which has students find the product of two fractions (2/3 and 3/4) by drawing a rectangle, dividing it into parts, and shading regions to represent the fractions and their product. The aim, materials, steps, observations, and conclusion are provided as a template for how to set up and explain the virtual math lab activities.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. The practical needs to be completed in the practical notebook. (In case of the
unavailability of the practical notebook, the practical can be done in the
practical file of the last session or any practical file which is readily
available.)

2. Fill in the index suitably before every activity.

3. Please follow the same pattern for doing the activity as shown below. Write
Page No., Experiment No. & Date for every activity.

ACTIVITY-1

AIM:

To find the product of two given fractions

2 3
(say and )
3 4

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

A plane white sheet of paper, a pencil, an

eraser, coloured pencils, glue stick, ruler and a
pair of scissors

PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:

Concept of fractions

PROCEDURE:

Step 1: Draw a rectangle of any length and breadth on a white

sheet of paper as shown in Fig. 1
Fig. 1
Step 2: Divide the rectangle into 3 equal parts along its length
and shade its 2 parts (say pink colour) as shown in Fig. 2

Fig. 2 Step 3: Now, divide the rectangle into 4 equal parts along its
breadth and shade its 3 parts (say purple colour) as shown in
Fig.3

Fig. 3
Step 4: Divide the rectangle into 3 equal parts along its length
(pink colour) and 4 equal parts along its breadth (purple colour)
as shown in Fig. 4.

OBSERVATIONS:
 In Fig. 2, the number of equal parts along the length = 3
Fig. 4 and the number of parts shaded in pink = 2
Thus, shaded portion in Fig. 2 represents the fraction =
𝟐
.
𝟑

 In Fig. 3, the number of equal parts along the breadth =

4
and the number of parts shaded in purple = 3
Thus, shaded portion in Fig. 3 represents the fraction =
𝟑
.
𝟒

 In Fig. 4, number of parts shaded in both colours = 6

and total number of equal parts obtained = 12
Thus, portion shaded in both colours in Fig. 4 represents
𝟔
the fraction = .
𝟏𝟐

.
CONCLUSION:
𝟐 𝟑 𝟔
× =
𝟑 𝟒 𝟏𝟐

𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔
Thus, Product of two fractions =
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔
