ASSIGNMENT 1 ON ACOUSTICS  VPPMPCOA
1. A cinema hall has a vol of 7500 cu. M it is required to have reverberation time of 15 sec. What should be the
total absorption in the hall?
(RT=0.165 V/A IN M) (RT=0.05 V/A IN FEET)
Unit: owu" open window unit.

Soln;

Given,
Vol= 7500 cu. M
RT= 1.5s

To Find: total absorption

∴RT= 0.161 V/A

∴1.5= 0.161 (7500/A)

∴A=0.161 (7500/1.5)

∴A= 805 o.w.u.

Hence the total absorption in the hall is 805 o w.u.

2. The vol of a room is 1200 cu. M, the wall area of the room is 220 sq. M, the floor area is 120 sq. M and the
ceiling area is 120 sq M al wall: 0.03, a2 floor: 0.06, a3 ceiling: 0.8

Cal avg. Avg sound absorption coefficient & Reverberation time

Soln;

Given:
V = 1200 cu. m,
S1 of room= 220 sq. m,
S2 of floor= 120 sq. m,
S3 of ceiling= 120 sq.m.

Al of wall= 0.03,
A2 of floor=0.06,
A3 of ceiling=0.8.

To Find: Avg absorption coefficient and Reverberation time.

Avg Absorption Coefficient

= a1.S1 + a2.52 + a3.53 / 51 + 52 + S3. [+]
=(0.03X220) + (0.06X120) + (0.8X120) / 220 + 120 + 120
= 0.238
= 0.24
Now, '
A'= (al.s1) + (a2.52) + (a3.53).
=10.03X220) (0.06X120) + (0.8X120)
= 109.8 o.w.u.
∴RT = 0.165 (V/A)
= 0.165 (1200/109.8)
=1.80s
4. find reverberation time for hall of dimension 40x30x20 cu. Feet. Find avg reverberation coefficient of 0.15
(find 'A')

Find 'S' (surface area)

Soln;

Given:
length= 40 feet,
breadth= 30 feet,
height=20 feet,
'a'= 0.15

a) Surface Area of the hall= 2(40x30) + (40x20) + (30x20)]

= 5200 sq. feet.

b) Average absorption coefficient=0.15

∴ total absorption coefficient 'a'= avg absorption coefficient x Total Surface Area.
a = 0.15 x 5200
∴ a = 780
∴R.T. = 0.05 (V/A)
∴R.T. = 0.05 (40x30x20/780)
∴R.T. = 1.538
= 1.54s.

6. if a university lecture hall is 15*83 cu. M is heavily damped with absorption coefficient 0.3. Calculate it's
reverberation time if approximation is applied.

Soln;

Given:
Length= 15m,
breadth=8m,
height=3m, a=0.3

to Find:
a) A,
b) R.T.

a) A = axs
A = 0.3 x [2(15x8) + (8x3) + ( 15x3)]
A = 113.4 o.w.u.

b) R.T. = 0.165 (V/A)

R.T. = 0.165 (15X8X3 / 113.4)
R.T. = 0.523 = 0.52s
RT=0.51s
