Assignment - Robotics - Robots Classification-JIRA RIA AFR

The document summarizes the classification of robots according to three robotics associations: JIRA, RIA, and AFRI. JIRA divides robots into 6 classes based on their level of autonomy, from manual (Class 1) to intelligent (Class 6). RIA uses a subset of the JIRA classes focusing on variable sequence robots onward. AFRI also categorizes robots into types A through D based on their level of manual vs programmable control. The document provides examples and descriptions of each class or type.

ASSIGNMENT # 01

COURSE: ROBOTICS

ROBOT:
Firstly, the word Robot was invented by Czech Writer Karel Capek in 1921 in his story Rossum’s
Universal Robot’s which was actually derived by the Czech word “Robota” which means “Work”.

The word “Robotics” was first used by writer Isaac Asimov. Robotics is a branch of engineering which
deals with the designing, planning, manufacturing, operation and controlling of robots. This field
comprises of Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer science and
Control engineering.

Definition:

This is a system which is capable to do a simple, complex, repetitive, dangerous, heavy and precision
task with or without any human intervention.

Robots are widely used:

 Where the human intervention is so dangerous,

 where human get bored due to the repetitive task,

 where human cannot do heavy works

 where human mind cannot speed up the process

 where human cannot work with accuracy, precision and speed and so on.

Due to above facts called also Intelligent Bots.

CLASSIFICATION OF ROBOTS:
Following are the internationally approved Robotics Association, who derived the Classification of
Robots on their own way.

1) JIRA (Japan Industrial Robot Association)

2) RIA (Robotics Institute of America)
3) AFR (Association Française de Robotique)

1) JIRA-Japan Industrial Robot Association:

According to JIRA, robots are divided into six classes or categories:

1) Class 1: Manual Handling Devices.
2) Class 2: Fixed Sequence Robots.
3) Class 3: Variable Sequence Robot.
4) Class 4: Playback Robot.
5) Class 5: Numerical Control Robot.
6) Class 6: Intelligent Robot.

2) RIA (Robotics Institute of America):

RIA comprises of Class 3 to Class 6 from JIRA.
1) Class 3: Variable Sequence Robot.
2) Class 4: Playback Robot.
3) Class 5: Numerical Control Robot.
4) Class 6: Intelligent Robot.

1) AFRI (Association Française de Robotique):

2) Type A: Manual control of robots. (Class 1 from JIRA)
3) Type B: Sequencing of robots. (Class 2 and 3)
4) Type C: Programmable and Numerically controlled robots. (Class 4 and 5)
5) Type D: Intelligent robot. (Class 6)

Description of Classes:
Class-1: Manual Handling Devices:
This is a system or robot in which human intervention is must. Means the robot is manually operated
and controlled by human. This is widely used for heavy and repetitive work.
Examples: Tractors, Cranes, Manual vehicles etc

Class-2: Fixed Sequence Robot:

This type of robot goes through a fixed predefined sequence task each time. We cannot modify its
sequence means it is not programmable.

Examples: Toy, assembly line work etc.

Class-3: Variable Sequence Robot:

This type of class is exactly the same as fixed sequence robot except it can be easily reprogrammable by
feeding its different sequence according to the different task or specification.

Class-4: Playback Robot:

2|P age
This class of robot is first instructed or guided by an operator then robot performs the sequence of
motion or task by reading of this stored information. This sequence of task automatically repeats itself.

Class-5: Numerical control robot:

This class of robot performs the sequence of task or motion by reading off the data in numerical form
which is first preprogrammed by an operator.
Example: CNC Lathe Machine, CNC Mills, CNC controlled Plasma Cutter etc.

Class-6: Intelligent Robot:

This type of robot performs the motion or task by sensing its own behavior, condition and environment.
It is preprogrammed by an operator using high level language i.e. C language, C++ etc.
Example: arc welding, bomb disposal etc
