CHAPTER I
Introduction
Education is significantly one of the most critical factors in shaping a human resource that is
necessary for development in every aspect of a country. Especially in the field of Mathematics, many
students encounter problems that affect their academic performance. One of the reasons is the wide
scope of information and the difficulty of the lessons. In the Philippines, Mathematics education is
facing a dilemma as shown in the low achievement scores of students in the National Achievement
Test and known as the Trends In Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) (Tatsouka, Corter, 2004;
DepEd 2012) cited from the international Journal of Educational Studies in Mathematics (Magayon &
Tan, 2016).
As a result, many studies are conducted to determine the number of students who struggles
with their topic in math. This study focuses on how the grade 9 students in Perpetual Help National
High School react to the difficulty of the topics in Mathematics 9 Quarter 3 especially, amidst the
pandemic where the ways of learning is completely changed compared to the ways where the students
are used to. This study also aims to flaunt that through this new teaching-learning approach, students
will play an active part and deepen their understanding towards the concept in Mathematics.
Rationale
Mathematics has been the most complex subject where one mistakes affect the overall answer
of the problem. In mathematics, only 19 % of the Filipino students were on the low benchmark, which

means that they had “some basic mathematical knowledge” which 81% did not even reach this level
(Bonz Magsambol, 2020).
The researchers chose the Academic performance of grade 9 students in Mathematics-
Quarter 3 out of curiosity to know the performances of the students in amidst of pandemic where face
to face classes are prohibited. In particular, this study aims to know whether or not distance learning
affects the academic performance in Mathematics of the selected Grade 9 students.
The study aims to determine the Academic Performance in Mathematics of Grade 9 students in
Perpetual Help National High School, Iriga City.
Significance
This section will provide brief section on the significance of the study given the status on
academic performance of the grade 9 students in Perpetual Help National High School.

This study utilized the hybrid design (quantitative plus qualitative research design) that uses
the data gathered from the survey as basis. To determine the number of students that must be
surveyed, the researchers used calculating quartiles, decile and percentile for grouped and ungrouped
data.
The survey consists of multiple-choice questions and one with explanations. The aim was to
conduct a survey with 150 grade 9 students in Perpetual Help National High School, from June 6-8,
2022 between 8 AM to11:30 AM. Students were given 10 minutes each to fill the survey
anonymously and 75% of 197 students responded.
Choosing survey and questionnaire as method of gathering data makes the work less
time-consuming and it is easier to collect information that Essential to the study. This method is used
since; it complies to the needs of the study.

CHAPTER IV
Based on the survey that is conducted, 75% of the respondents answered the questions (75%
of the students have the grade of less than or equal to the 96. 42). Majority of the grade 9 student
preferred the group work option in solving math problems. They spend 10 minutes in solving Math
equations/problems. The survey also finds that the most difficult topic that they are having a bad time
to comprehend is the topic about ‘’Special Right triangle’’. Most of the answers of the students define
Mathematics as a very difficult subject, also some students finds Mathematics a very difficult subject.

Lack of reference materials is also one of the problems they faced. Based from the answers of
the students, the modular distance learning affects their academic performance in Mathematics 9
Quarter 3. Every student that we surveyed has different reasons why they are having problems in
solving math problems and equations.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS
As for the data and the findings are concerned, it can be concluded that:
1. 125 out of 150 or 83% of Grade 9 students in Perpetual Help National High School learn
best when they are learning with “peers” or when engaged in group work;
2. 110 out of 150 or 73% of the Grade 9 students spend 20 minutes studying Mathematics;
3. 105 out of 150 or 70% of the Grade 9 students finds Parallelogram as the most difficult
topic in Quarter 3;
4. 125 out of 150 or 83% of Grade 9 students finds Mathematics a “very difficult” subject;
5. 135 out of 150 or 90% of Grade 9 students were affected by Modular Distance Learning
in terms of Academic Performance.

The researchers recommend that the students who got 75-85 should develop an effective
system of study or learning strategies that will enable them to understand the Mathematics better and,
at the same time achieving the standard grades of the topic. Also, approaching subject matter experts
to ask for help when you’re having a hard time is also recommended enable to better understand the
topic.
