Course Description: This course emphasis is on Teaching English Literature.

Subject: Teaching English Literature.


Grade: Post-graduate
Language: English

Time: 20 Minutes.
Topic: “King Lear” by William Shakespeare Act1, Scene1.
Materials: Power Point Presentation, Laptop, Projector, Mini-White Boards,
Sticky notes.
Organization: The Whole Class, Group Work.
Classroom Layout: U-Shape, Two Groups.

Learning Goal

This lesson is designed to familiarize learners with the play “King Lear” by a well-known author
William Shakespeare Act1, Scene1. It is intended to provide learners with the significance basic
elements of drama through the play “King Lear”, and to motivate learners improve their abilities
to analyze some quotes in it.

Learning Objectives
By the completion of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1- Define the term “Drama”. (2 minutes)
Activity: Think, Pair, Share. (The Whole Class)
Direction: Ask learners to think for one minute about the definition of the term “Drama” from
what they have taken in the previous lecture and then share it with the class.

2- Identify some facts about the playwright William Shakespeare. (3 minutes)


Activity: Through PPT.
Direction: The learners will know the background about the author of the play “King Lear” by
the teacher through slides (5 and 6) of the PPT.

3- Illustrate the background of the play “King Lear” Act1, Scene1. (3+2= 5 minutes)
Activity: Video. (3 minutes)
Direction: Show a video to learners. The video contains the events of the play “King Lear”
Act1, Scene 1. This video will help learners to get a good background of the play “King Lear”
and what will be covered in the following slides.

4- Understand the essential elements of drama through the play “King Lear”. (5 minutes)
Activity: Through PPT
Direction: Ask the learners about the essential elements of drama. Throughout the slides, the
teacher shows and illustrates each element's meaning and links them with the play “King
Lear”.

5- Utilize context clues to analyze some quotes from the play “King Lear” Act 1, Scene1.
(3 minutes)
Activity: Through PPT.
Direction: The teacher demonstrates one, and then the learners analyse the following quotes
and share them with the class.

6- Practise the play “King Lear”. (2 minutes)


Activity: Quiz (Group Work), Mini-White Boards
Direction: Divide the class into two groups.
Ask learners to choose a group’s name from the play “King Lear”.
The teacher gives them different questions about the play “King Lear”.
Ask each group to answer some questions and choose a speaker to say them.

Previous Knowledge

Learners should have a basic knowledge of drama and its literary elements.

Warmer (Lead in): review the meaning of the term “Drama”.

 Background about the playwright “William Shakespeare”.
(3 minutes)
 Background about the play “King Lear” Act1, Scene 1 with a video.
(5 minutes)
 Basic elements of drama through the play “King Lear” Act1, Scene1, which are:

1- The Plot: the sequence of events which take place in the play.
2- The Theme: the central idea or message of the play.
3- The Setting: the play’s place and time.
4- The Characters: the people are presented in the play.
5- The Conflict: is the struggle between two entities and can be (internal / external).
6- The Narrator/ Point of View: the perspective from which the play is told.

 Analyse some quotes in the play “King Lear” Act1-Scene1, such as:
(3 minutes)
1- “With my two daughters' dowers digest this third; Let pride, which she calls plainness,
marry her.”
2- “See better, Lear, and let me still remain The true blank of thine eye”.
3- “Nothing. Lear: Nothing can come of nothing. Speak again”.

 Questions regarding the play “King Lear”, which are:


(2 minutes)
1- Who is the writer of “King Lear”?
2- What type of drama is “King Lear”?
3- Where does the play “King Lear” take place?
4- Lear is king of what country?
5- Which one of Lear’s daughters is sent into exile?
6- Which one of Lear’s counsellors reprimands the king for exiling his daughter?

Assessment
Formative assessment through doing a quiz.
Learners will answer some questions about the play “King Lear”.
These questions to assess the students’ understanding.
Ask the learners to prepare PBL on the same play for the next lecture.

Reflection
Check achieving the outcomes through:
Learners answer the questions about the play “King Lear” correctly.
Give learners sticky notes to write their reflections on the lesson depends on:
 What did they enjoy…?
 What did they find out…?
 What did they find very useful…?
