Seasonal greetings from the Surgical Society of Bengaluru, ASI city chapter.
It gives us immense pleasure to welcome you all to Bengaluru, the Garden city as is known for its
pleasant climate. We are proud to host the 43rd Prof.B.Hanumaiah memorial National Surgical Education
Program from 19 to 24 November. On Sunday 19 November (limited registration) will be hands on
workshop on surgery skills of both laparoscopy and open skills including stapled intestinal anastomosis.
For the next 5 days you will have the feast of clinic's and discussions.
Please enjoy a pleasant stay in Bengaluru and experience the rich academics and warm hospitality
during the CSEP 2017. The tremendous popularity of the CSEP is reflected by the fact that it's being
conducted successfully for 43 years on a trot. For over the last four decades, this teaching program is
keenly sought after by numerous surgery postgraduates from all over India with around 480 students
attending annually from more than 90 Institutes. The faculty who train you are experts in their fields and
have decades of experience in teaching surgery postgraduates. They come from various medical colleges
of Karnataka as well as from the neighboring states so that you get a rich blend of exposure in various
aspects of surgical training. This CSEP aims at training you towards presenting surgical cases as you do in
your passing examination, the lectures, interactive sessions are aimed at equipping you for the theory as
well as enabling you to practice as a good surgeon. The topics for the guest lectures are based on the most
commonly asked questions in the previous surgery examinations.
Please participate actively, voluntarily in the clinical case presentation, discussions and feel
comfortable to raise questions and clarify your doubts. Also, approach our experienced and renowned
anchors Dr. Anjanappa & team for any clarifications.
The Karnataka State level surgery quiz, anchored by Dr. Rajan C.S & team will be held on
Wednesday, 22nd November 2017. All current surgical post graduate students, MS and DNB, are eligible to
participate in the prelims. The winning team (Pair) from the Karnataka state will be sponsored by KSC-ASI
to represent Karnataka at the Grand National Surgical Quiz during ASICON 2017 at Jaipur in December.

PROF. B. HANUMAIAH
Dr. Hanumaiah was born on 1/10/1920 at
Nelamangala taluk. He completed his secondary
education in Magadi town following which he was
encouraged by the government to carry on with his
studies in medicine. He secured 1st rank in LMP
conducted by the Medical School of Mysore state in
1941.

In 1946 he received Freemason Golden jubilee prize

from His Highness Sri Jayachamarajendre Wodeyer
the Maharaja of Mysore for having secured first rank
in MBBS. He was deputed by the govenment to
United Kingdom for higher studies in Surgery in
1953. He cleared FRCS from Edinburgh in first
attempt in 1955. On his return he was appointed as
resident medical officer at Victoria Hospital and thus
began his long and illustrious career. He served as
Associate Professor of Surgery at Bangalore Medical
College in 1958 and was later moved to Mysore as
Professor of Surgery. In 1966 he returned to
Bangalore as Professor of Surgery and later on
became the director of postgraduate studies in 1971.
He became the dean and principal of Postgraduate
Institute of Bowring Lady Curzon Hospital and also
ex officio Superintendent of the hospital.

He was the member of Senate, Academic Council,

and Chairman, Board of Examination, University of
Bangalore. He was the Head of the department of
Surgery of Bangalore Medical College till his
superannuation in 1987. He was the recipient of
Rajyothsava award by the Govt of Karnataka and
Doctors Day award by the Indian Medical
Association, Bangalore.

He attained heavenly adobe on 7.3.1995.

Dr. M. AUTHIKESHAVALU
Dr. Muniswamy Authikeshavalu was born on 16th
August 1906 at Bangalore. After completing a
course in LMP he went on to do MBBS from Madras
University where he was the best outgoing student.
He was deputed to Canada where he obtained his
fellowship (FRCS). He worked in Mayo clinic USA
with a special interest in intestinal abstruction. after
returning to India he joined Victoria Hospital in
1956. Later he became the principal and Dean of
Bangalore Medical College. He is known for his
Marathon Teaching sessions. He pioneered work on
“Peptic Ulcer Treatment - Truncal Vagotomy and
Gastro Jejunostomy”. His original research work is
still preserved at Mayo Clinic. He retired in 1967
from Government service and joined CSI hospital,
but continued to teach students from St. Johns
Medical College. He was married to Achamma and
has two sons and one daughter.

He succumbed to cancer of stomach in 1973.

Open surgery skills session: orientation to various surgical instruments, asepsis, how
to use the sharp equipments safely, knot tying, suturing, bowel anastamosis and other
exercises.

Endo Trainers Session: Basic laparoscopic training including various instruments,

orientation to camera and monitor, multiple hand eye coordination exercises, extra
corporeal knotting and if possible intra corporeal suturing.

 Dr. NITHYANANDA SHETTY

Dr.Nithyananda Shetty was a dynamic young surgeon and

an active member of the Surgical Society of Bangalore and a
reputed Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
Born on 8th April 1952, Nithya was the fourth son of a family
of agriculturalists. He completed his MBBS and MS Degrees
from J J M Medical College, Davangere. He joined the
department of cardiothoracic surgery at St Johns Medical
College under Dr. Jerry Mascarenhas before moving to CMC
Vellore to pursue higher Surgical training in Cardiothoracic Surgery and
obtained MCh from CMC Vellore in 1985. He returned to Bangalore and joined
St John's Medical College as Asst Professor in Cardiothoracic surgery and later
on became the Professor and Head of the department in 1989. He resigned from
the college in 1994 and joined MS Ramaiah Medical College as Head of the
department, a post that he held till he breathed his last in 2004.
He was an excellent surgeon, very popular teacher and above all an extremely
good human being. He made sure his presence was felt in the academic
meetings he attended and did not hesitate to put forth his views while
participating in a debate. Apart from the Surgical Society he was an active
member of Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of India and Cardiological
Society of India. He was recognized as a giant in the field of thoracic surgery and
was well known for his work in peripheral vascular surgery. He was selected as
the Starr Ahmed Fellow and delivered a masterly Godrej Karal oration in 2003.
He performed innumerable number of operations both complex and
complicated with very good results. His Patients loved him for his simplicity and
straight forwardness. He was quite popular amongst his friends and colleagues
and was a devoted family man.
His untimely death in 2004 left scores of individuals among the family and
friends in a state of shock and grief. He was at the peak of his professional career
and enjoying life with his family and friends when disaster took him away. His
memory will always remain in our heart and mind. We will never forget his
contribution to the profession and to the society.
