RAINBOWS
A rainbow is the refraction of sunlight or raindrops. The larger the raindrops, the more
brilliant are the colors in the rainbow. Sometime, when
a rainbow is particularly bright, a
paler' secondary bow with the colors reversed,
can appear behind it. If someone watching the
rainbow moves, the light will be refracted through
different raindrops. The sun, always behind
the watcher, will light up constantly changing raindrops
as the watcher moves forward, until
there is no more rain left to refract and the rainbow

THANKSGIVING DAY
When the first Englishmen settlecl in \eu' England in 1620, their first year was full of
hard'ships ' Many of them diecl because the tt'inter was much colder than what they were used
to' Although they sutTered greatly, thcy u,orked hard to build their
houses and plant a few
crops' These people believed in the power of God and prayed
that He would lead, them softly
through their hardships in the new country.
When they harvested the first crops they were greatly surprised
because they had not
expected a very good harvest. Now they had plenty of good
to eat and everybody was happy.
They had enough food for the next winter. Because of that
the government proclaimed a day
of thanksgiving to God for having led them safely through their
clif/icult flstyear.
They sent four men to the woods to find animals for the
thanksgiving/east. They
retuired with a large number of aniinals, most of which were
furkeys. The fast lasted almost a
week' A large number of friendly natives were invited to the
thanksgiving feast.
By this time the small groups of Englishmen were beginning to
think that they were
used to the weather of the new country. But suddenly in
May 1623 it stopped raining. The
crops were almost destroyed. The governor then appointed
a day in the middle of Julv for
25
fasting prayer. It seemed that their prayers were not in vain, since soon after they had
and
fasted and prayed the weather changed, and their crops were saved. Again a day of
thanksgiving was proclaimed and a feast was given. Since the first thanksgiving feast it has
become a tradition among Americans to always have turkey for their thanksgiving dinner.

THE \/ISITING TEACHER
The vrsiting teacher was started by the lesson. She was surprised because the
teaching methods were very different from the ways of teaching in her own country. A
children's art lesson in her owns country p1sduqgd a room full of unique pictures, each one
completely different from the others. Why? What causes this difference in educational
methods? In a classroom in any country, the instructor teaches more than art of history or
language. He or she also teaches culture (the ideas and beliefs that society). Each
educational system is a mirror that reflects the culture of the society.
In a western society such as United States or Canada, which has many national,
religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism , the differences
among people - and independent thinking. Teachers place a lot of importance on the
qualities that make each student oppq!a1. The educational systems in these countries show
these values. Students do not often memorize information. Instead, they work individually
and find answer themselves; and they express their ideas in class discussion. At an early age,
students leam to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history,
and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of Asia reflects
society's belief in group goals and traditions rather than individualism. Children in China,
Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the
classroom. The teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the
students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or
Information that they have memorized.
The advantage of educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that
students leam to think for themselves. They learn to take the initiative
- to make a decision
and take action without someone telling them what to do. The system prepares them for a
31
society that values creative ideas. when students graduate
from high school, they haven,t
