Using Mobile Phones to develop English language learning

By Amal Mohammad Albshray

December 2017
In today's world, almost every student has a Mobile phone. Many students spend half
of their time on the phone doing different activities. Some of them find it essential to
carry their Mobile Phone everywhere they even prefer to use it instead of the desktop
to search, do homework, or to study. Recently King Khalid university has allowed the
female students to use their Mobile phones inside the campus. This decision can help
the learning process of English language. The learners can use their Mobile phones to
improve their English language in the classroom as a class activity and outside the
classroom to self- study. If the students are encouraged to use their Mobile phones to
enhance their English language, student's language proficiency will be much
improved.

In Japan (2004) Kiernan and Aizawa conducted a study on Freshman university

students to evaluate the use of mobile phones as tools for classroom learning. The
result of the study proofed that mobile device is "a language learning resource worthy
of further investigation."(p.17) The students comment on the benefits of mobile
devices as making things, faster, better, and easier in communication. There are many
ways to use mobile devices in the classroom, the teacher can ask her students to
search for a specific information on the internet, or to check a website, or to send
them an article and ask them to read it and to share their feedback on it with the class.
This will make the students more involved in the class. Another way of using mobile
phones is Mobile Dictionary. the mobile dictionary is like our pocket dictionary. It is
more helpful than the printed dictionaries. It helps us to get all the information
required about a word including the pronunciation of the word quickly and easy. The
teacher can ask the students to search for a word and to give specific information
about it in the classroom, instead of asking them to do it later. These activities could
change the vibes of the lectures to make it more interesting to the students.

Nowadays mobile devices have special applications for learning and communication
in English. They are entertaining and easy to access in anytime. I asked five students
from the English department whether they have used applications in their
smartphones to develop their English? Only one student answered with "yes". What
the students don’t know is that There are applications that are designed to develop
specific English skills. For example, English language Podcasts are a great way to
improve the students listening skills. By listening to native speakers pronouncing
different words, speaking in different accents, and addressing different topics every
day. the students can develop their listening and speaking skills as well. Another
effective use of mobile devices is WhatsApp group. The teacher can share with their
students, different videos, pictures, or links regarding the course and ask them and to
have a look at it and discuss it later in the class. This will keep the students active and
involved in the learning process outside the classroom. there are many great
applications to develop English skills like Reading, Writing, and Grammar.
To conclude, using mobile phones to develop English language learning encourage
the students to incorporate self-study into their busy life, which can highly enhance
the student's progress in learning. Of course, there are some considerations that go
beyond the domain of this essay. Such as college policies, class distribution, and
teachers’ digital literacy. However, these should not be a reason to not promote using
mobile phones in and outside the classroom.

Then I started writing the essay, I wrote the introduction, my introduction was a
statement of the thesis, then it was a matter of writing the body of the essay, my thesis
was the structure of my work, I used the information I collected before and I made
sure that they all support my thesis, after that I wrote my conclusion which was a
summary of the whole essay. I revised my essay, one of the things that helped me in
revising was that I printed my essay on paper, then I revised it line by line then
paragraph by paragraph I checked the grammar and style of my writing I checked the
unity, coherence, and development of my essay. I underlined my mistakes and I wrote
notes on how to correct them, then I edited the mistakes I found and revised it for the
