Cigar Knowledge Manual

Cigars are composed of tobacco leaves wrapped in another leaf. The key leaves are the wrapper, filler, and binder. Cigars come in different shapes and sizes and are produced primarily in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras/Nicaragua, Philippines/Indonesia, and Cameroon. A humidor maintains the ideal humidity and temperature for storing cigars to prevent them from drying out. Common drinks that complement cigars include port, cognac, wine, scotch, rum, and Irish cream.

Cutting and lighting

Cutting equipment:
 Bulls - eye cutter
 Piercers
 Blades
 Teeth

The cap end of a cigar must be cut off for the cigar to be smoked properly. It is the rounded end
without the tobacco exposed, and this is the end one should always cut. If the cap is cut jaggedly
or without care, the end of the cigar will not burn evenly and smokable tobacco will be lost.
Smoking cigar from the wrong end may result in a bad experience.

There are three basic types of cigar cutters:

1. Guillotine ( Straight cut )

2. Punch cut
3. V-cut
Lighting:

1. Long matches
2. Lighter
3. Torch

Storing Cigar

Humidor is A humidor is any kind of box or room with constant humidity (and often
temperature as well) used to store cigars, cigarettes, or pipe tobacco

There are four classifications of humidor s,

Table humidor,

Usually quite heavy and though portable in theory, is usually kept static in one location. Usually can hold
300 to a few thousand cigars. Usually comes in polished wood exterior or marble or leather or
combination of exotic elements, and glass tops.

Room humidor,

This is usually common in cigar bars or stores. One room is usually converted to a humidor where all the
cigars are stored.

Travel humidor,

Usually portable and ideal for carrying cigars enough for the outing or event. Usual counts supported are
10 to 40 cigars.

Personal humidor,

Casual cigar smokers will sometimes keep a small humidor in their homes for special events, or for the
look and feel. They are similar to travel humidors, though they can contain up to 75 (sometimes even
more) cigars. However, the average casual smoker will have a humidor that contains about 30 to 100
cigars

*a storage container designed to allow controlled air –flow and maintain temperature

*70 – 75 % humidity
