LESSON

WEB 2.0, WEB 3.0 AND USER PARTICIPATION IN THE WEB

Do you remember these three evolutions of the web?

Based on our previous lesson, web 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0

are theoretical concepts that define the problems that
developers, as well as users, could face and tackle.

It all began with Web 1.0, which defined the web as read-
only. It concentrated on content that was mainly owned by
the companies. In 1996, it started from 45 million global
user and eventually grew 1 billion + global users in 2016
when Web 1.0 eventually evolved into Web 2.0. At this state, its focused more
on the community and the contents were from shared information. Due to the
dynamic characteristic, Web 2.0 was described as “the wildly read-write web.”
Unlike the two, the Web 3.0 is best described as a “read-write-execute” and
“the portable personal web.” It focused more on the individual and the
consolidated dynamic content.

The image shows the differences of the three

These three terms are very different from each other, but they have one thing
in common: user participation. This term was mentioned in the module 2 as
one of the features of Web 2.0. It is defined as “the owner of the website is not
the only one who is able to post content; others are able to post content of
their own by means of feedback, reviews and evaluations.”

RICH CONTENT IN THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT AND USER

EXPERIENCE

An active participation of the user is a good sign that the website has a rich
media content. These media contents used advanced technology that allows
advanced animations and/or supports audio/radio for advertising and
communicating immediately for instant user interactions.

These are the examples:

1. YOUTUBE
- To attract and keep an audience, this platform maximizes its rich media
content to show what they valued the most; freedom of expression, freedom
of information, freedom of opportunity and freedom to belong. YouTube
provides the tools where people can freely speak their voices, freely access for
information and education, a chance to discover and build their ventures, and
find communities that shared same interests and passions.

2. FACEBOOK
- Through this social networking site, people freely connect and communicate
with friends and family, easily find communities, and can grow businesses.
Through its rich media content, information may be shared through photos,
videos, messages, and status.

Rich content also influences and modifies the online environment. For website
developers and designers, a well-conceptualized website is a matter of
concern. They are following these elements:

1. USEFULNESS OF THE WEBSITE

The usefulness of a website really depends to the individual who uses it. It is
important to identify the users or target audience to be able to show the
usefulness of the website.

2. ADHERENCE TO FUNCTIONALITY
This is also a challenge to pay attention to accessibility. Integrating rich media
content is not only designed; it must have a function. Failure to view a link
correctly on a specific screen or in a browser is a case of a malfunction. It
greatly affects the user experience and the online environment you are
creating.

3. USABILITY
It is a measure of how simple it is for a user to manipulate the site (especially
for the infrequent or brand-new users) and how convenient it is to use on the
long term (for daily visitors).

4. INFLUENCE
Before, most of the websites developed were Web 1.0, owned by companies,
and serve a commercial purpose such selling products, services,
subscriptions, etc. While it's not more sophisticated than we have now, it
maximizes the functionality of the website for effective advertising to influence
the consumers.

5. VISUAL DESIGN
Aside from the function, rich media content must contribute to the over-all
aesthetic of the website. Integrating rich media content must be placed well
and in strategically places of your websites. It contributes to user experience
and online environment.

When World Wide Web started, it has 45 million global users only, but when
it evolved into Web 2.0, the number of the users got higher. It shows that
having a rich media content gives a different effect on the user experience and
creates a great online environment.

LESSON

However, this pandemic hinders us to have a face-

to-face interaction. For M. Scott Peck, all human
interactions are opportunities to learn and to teach.
Thankfully, developers managed to add interactivity
with our web pages.

These days, we could quickly send and receive

messages in several ways, and with that,
we could accomplish the engagement we 're
looking for. However, the interaction may differ
depending on the level:

1. When the reply is not related to previous messages,

it not interactive;
2. it is reactive when the reply is related only to one immediately previous
message; and
3. when the responses were related to a few previous messages and to the
relationship between them, it is interactive.

These messages could not only be transmitted

and received by traditional media such as text,
graphics/drawings and images, but can also
be achieved by multimedia.

Multimedia is any computer information that can be

represented through audio, video, and animation
integrated with any traditional media. This information
can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed
digitally.
These are the basic elements of multimedia:

motion.

It has two categories:

1. linear multimedia – it does not

feature any sort of navigational
abilities and it progresses in
chronological order. It is useful to
transmit a fixed message.

For example: Video presentation

2. non-linear multimedia – it allows free

movement around all aspects of the
multimedia in any order.
For example: Hypermedia like games

Here are the multimedia contents that you can search on certain websites
and link to your own web page:

VIDEO
It is a series of recorded motion picture which are shown on television or
viewed on a screen (Cambridge Dictionary). You can share your self-made
video through video hosting sites such as YouTube.
SOUND, MUSIC, or AUDIO
It is something that you can listen, or that can be heard. For example:
Spotify
ONLINE GAMES
Before we had Mobile Legends, users enjoyed browser-based games like
online games found in Y8.com and Facebook. Browser-based games can be
run and played without installing it in your device.
ONLINE TEST
Online survey forms and tests that automatically display the results when
finished.
You can try: 5 Love Languages and 16 Personalities
COURSEWARE
Online courses that simulate the classroom online. TESDA offers online
courses that can be done at home. Check their website: www.e-

PODCAST
This term is a combination of of “iPod” and “broadcast”. An episodic series
of digital audio files (or text files) that a user can download to a personal
device for listening (Wikipedia). For example: TED Talks and Ear Biscuits
VODCAST
It is a video stored in a digital form that you can download from the Internet
and play and viewed on a device (Cambridge Dictionary). For example:
YouTube series/shows like Good Mythical Morning, Facebooks live
streaming videos

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of multimedia:

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
✓ It is very user-friendly. ➢ Information overload
✓ It is multi-sensorial. ➢ It takes time to compile.
✓ It is integrated and interactive. ➢ It can be expensive.
✓ It is flexible. ➢ Too muck makes it unpractical.
✓ It can be used for a wide variety
of audiences.

Invite Contributor

This is one of the Site Actions that can be utilized by the user of Wix. This
feature allows the owner (creator of the site) of the website to invite other
people to help manage their site. They are called ‘contributors’. Being the
website owner, you have the right to manage all aspects of your site including
inviting contributors and handling their permission. Each invited contributor
must have their own Wix account.

Note: Currently, it is not feasible for more than one contributor

to edit a site at a time. Proper scheduling is desired to ensure
every contributor will be able to fulfill their role.

How do you invite a contributor? You have to go to your account’s dashboard.

There are three ways to do this. If you are in the Edit environment of your
website, go to Site and at the bottom of the list, click Exit Editor. Still in Edit
environment, go to Settings then click My Dashboard. And lastly, you can
Log in to your account and straight away you’ll be directed to your dashboard.

Once you are in your dashboard, look for the specific website that you wish
to be shared to other people. Click Site Action button then choose Invite
Contributor.

The Invite People to This Site page will appear. Type in the email address
of your contributor, choose the assigned Role for them then click Send
Invite. The contributor’s invitation will be sent to their email address and
the recipient must respond by confirming the request.
When you invite a contributor, you choose the role that you assign to them.
As the owner, you have to define the kind of access that a contributor can
have over your website. The key is to identify what type of access that is
relevant to a particular contributor. This role assignment can also be changed
by the owner from time to time.

Below are the general available Roles for Contributor in Wix.

1. Admin
Has complete access to the website but cannot change the payment
information, remove or duplicate the site.
2. Limited Admin
The contributor has full access to the site but cannot change the payment
information, remove or duplicate the file or publish the site.
3. Website Manager
This person can help you create or design your website but has limited
access in your site's dashboard to prevent viewing sensitive and business
information.
4. Limited Website Manager
May edit the site, access the dashboard to monitor site settings and
applications, but the site cannot be published by this person.
5. Back Office Manager
Has the authority to access the dashboard to manage site settings and
apps but cannot change the site. Contributors with this role will be able to
access and manage confidential and business information.
6. Blog Editor
A Blog Editor has full access to every feature in the Blog Manager including
publishing, deleting, and editing blog posts and managing categories but
not other areas of your site.
7. Blog Writer
This contributor can write posts but cannot create or manage categories.
