Class 7 Ch-4 Heat Notebook Work

This document provides information about heat for a 7th grade science class, including questions and answers to copy into a science notebook. It defines heat and temperature, explains the differences between clinical and laboratory thermometers, why mercury is used in thermometers, what a kink is and its uses. It also distinguishes between the three modes of heat transfer - conduction, convection and radiation - and provides examples. Students are instructed to draw diagrams of a clinical thermometer, laboratory thermometer, and land and sea breezes in their notebooks.

Question and Answers:

Q1. State three differences between clinical and laboratory thermometers. ( question bank)

SNo. Clinical Thermometer Laboratory Thermometer

1 It is used to measure the It is used to measure the temperature of
temperature of a human body liquids and other substances in laboratories.
2 They have kink. They do not have kink
3 The range of clinical thermometer The range of laboratory thermometer is from
is from 35 – 42 -10 - 110
Q2. Why is mercury used in thermometers? Give two points. (Question bank)

Ans: Mercury is used in thermometers because:

1. It does not stick to the glass of the thermometers.

2. It expands uniformally on heating.

3. It is a shiny liquid and it`s easy to take the reading.

Q3. What is a kink? What are its uses?(MLP)

Ans: It is a bend or a constriction in a thermometer.

The uses of kink are:

1. It prevents the mercury from falling on its own. Hence helps us to take the correct
reading of temperature.

Q4. Distinguish between heat and temperature. (soc level 1)

SNo. Heat Temperature

1 Heat is a form of energy which The degree of hotness is called temperature
gets transferred from hotter or
colder part of an object.
2 SI unit of heat is Joules (J) SI unit of temperature is Kelvin (K)
3 Heat cannot be measured directly. Temperature can be measured by using
thermometer.
Q5. Write a short note on – i) Conduction ii) Convection iii) Radiation

Ans: a) Conduction:

• It is the mode of transfer of heat from hotter to colder part of an object without the actual
movement of molecules.
• It takes place only in solids.
• For conduction to take place, the objects have to be in contact with each other.
b) Convection:

• It is the mode of transfer of heat which takes place with the actual movement of molecules.
• It takes place only in liquids and gases.
• In this each particle receives heat energy. This particle moves up giving chance to the
surrounding particles to receive energy.
c) Radiation:

• Transfer of heat from one object to another without any medium.

• It is the fastest mode of heat transfer.
• Any object which is hot radiates heat.
• Radiation transfers heat from the source to the receiving object directly.
Q6. Give reason –

a) We prefer to wear white coloured clothes in summer.

Ans. We prefer to wear white coloured clothes in summer as:
1. It absorbs less heat
2. It reflects most of the heat as compared to dark colour clothes.
Hence, keeps us cool.
b) It is essential to wash a clinical thermometer with an antiseptic before and after
use.(Question Bank)

Ans: It is essential to wash a clinical thermometer with an antiseptic before and after use as
the germs might get transferred to the other person who is using and antiseptic solution kills
all the germs.

Q7. Can a metal ball be heated by convection? Why? (Question Bank)

Ans: A metal ball cannot be heated by convection because

• Convection only takes place in liquids and gases.

• Metals can only be heated by conduction.

Q8.Why are ice slabs covered with gunny bags? (Question Bank)

Ans. Ice slabs are covered with gunny bags as:

• Gunny bags are made up of jute. Jute is a bad conductor of heat and doesn`t let heat escape.

• There are air spaces between the fibres of gunny bag trap the air. Air is an insulator of heat
and it does not allow the heat of the surroundings to melt the ice.
