Example - Trusses Subject To Compression and Tension

The document provides examples of designing structural members according to Eurocode standards. In the first example, it analyzes and verifies the design of a web chord member subjected to compression. The second example analyzes and verifies the design of a bolted member subjected to tension. Both examples calculate load capacities and check that the selected cross sections meet or exceed the required design loads.

EXAMPLE 1 : TRUSS DESIGN OF MEMBER SUBJECTED TO COMPRESSION

Member subjected to compression load. Design of web chord. Design the web in Fe 430 steel (S275).
From analysis, NEd = 1630 kN.

Table Try section 244.5 x 10 CHS Fe 430 (S275)

Properties
d = 244.5 mm I = 5073000 cm4
t = 10.0 mm Wei = Wey = 415000 mm3
2
A = 7370 mm Wpi = Wply = 5030000 mm3

Table 3.1 Material Properties :

Steel grade = Fe 430 (S275)
t < 40 mm ; fy = 275 N/mm2 fu = 430 N/mm2

Table 5.2 Classification of section :

Ɛ = √(235 / fy ) = √(235 / 275 )

= 0.92

d/t = 244.5 / 10
= 24.5

Limit for Class 1 = 50 Ɛ2 = 42.32

Class 1 42.32 > 24.5

Clause Compression resistance checking :

6.2.4 The checking must satisfy

= (7370)(275)
( 1 x 103 )
= 2026.75 kN

NEd = 1630 kN < Nc,Rd = 2026.75 kN ------------------ OK

Clause Buckling Resistance Checking :

6.3.1 (3) The checking must satisfy ,

Clause Therefore,
6.3.1.2
But χ < 1.0

Where,
Reference Calculation

Ncr = π2 EI / Lcr2
= (π2 x 2100000 x 50730000) / (40002)
= 6571 kN

= √ ( 7370 x 275) / (6571 x 103)

= 0.56

Table 6.2 Selection of buckling curve and imperfection factor α, For hot rolled CHS, Use buckling curve (Table 6.2 of
EN 1993-1-1)

Table 6.4 For curve buckling curve a, α = 0.21 (Table 6.4)

Φ = 0.5 [ 1 + 0.21 (0.56 – 0.2)] + 0.562
= 0.69

χ = 1 / [(0.69 + √(0.692 – 0.652)]

= 0.91

Thus,
Nb,y,Rd = (0.91)(7370 x 102)(275)
( 1 x 103 )
= 184431.25 kN

NEd = 1630 kN < Nb,y,Rd = 184431.25 kN ------------------ OK

THE CHOSEN CROSS SECTION 244.5 x 10 CHS Fe 430 (S275) IS ACCEPTABLE

EXAMPLE 2 : TRUSS DESIGN TO BOLTED MEMBER SUBJECT TO TENSION

Member subjected to tension load. Design the member in Fe 430 steel (S275). Section is connected to 2
bolt of size M20 mm and the value of P1 = 120 mm (P1 is the spacing between center of fasteners in a
line in the direction of load transfer). From analysis, NEd = 13.48 kN.

Table Try section 40 x 40 x 4.0 Angle Section

Properties h = 40 mm I = Iy = Iz = 4.53 cm4
t = 4.0 mm i = iy = iz = 1.21 cm
2
A = 3.05 cm iu = 1.52 cm , iv = 0.78 cm

Table 3.1 Material Properties :

Steel grade = Fe 430 (S275)
t < 40 mm ; fy = 275 N/mm2 fu = 430 N/mm2

Clause Tension Resistance Checking

6.23 The checking must satisfy :

For section with holes the design tension resistance Nt,Rd should be taken as the smaller of :
a) The design plastic resistance of the gross cross-section,

= (3.05 x 102) (275)

1 x 103
= 84.98 kN

NEd = 13.48 kN < Nc,Rd = 84.98 kN ------------------ OK

EN 1993-
1-8 b) The design ultimate resistance of the net cross-section at holes for fasteners
Clause
3.10.3 (2)

do = 20 + 2 = 22 mm

Anet = A - ∑dot
= 305 – (22 x 4 )
= 217 mm2

For 2 bolts connection

P1 = 120 mm
5.0 do = 5.0 (22) = 110
Reference Calculation

P1 = 120 mm > 5.0 do = 110

EN 1993-
1-8 Therefore use , reduction factors = 0.7
Table 3.8
Nu,RD = 0.7 (217)(430)
1.25
= 52253.6 N = 52.25 kN

Since Nu,Rd = 52.25 kN < Nc,Rd = 84.98 kN

Therefore, NT,RD = 52.25 kN

NT,RD = 52.25 kN > NEd = 13.48 kN -------------- OK

THE CHOSEN CROSS SECTION 40 x 40 x 4.0 ANGLE SECTION Fe 430 (S275) IS ACCEPTABLE
