Assignment 4: Interference of Light

Last Date of Submission: 2079/03/30

1. In a double slit experiment, the distance between slits is 5mm and the slits are 1m from the screen. Two
interference patterns can be seen: one due to light of wavelength 480nm and the other due to light of
wavelength 600nm. What is the separation on the screen between the third order fringes of two interference
patterns?
[2071 Magh]
2. Two sources of intensities 4I and I are used in an interference experiment. Obtain the intensities at points
where the waves from two sources superimpose with a phase difference of (a) 0, (b) 𝜋/2 and (c) 𝜋.
[2071 Bhadra]
3. Interference fringes are produced with monochromatic light falling normally on a wedge shaped film of
cellophone with refractive index 1.4. The angle of wedge is 40 sec of an arc and the distance between the
successive fringes is 0.125cm. Calculate the wavelength of light.
[2077 Chaitra]
4. A glass wedge of angle 0.01radian is illuminated by monochromatic light of wavelength 6000Afalling
normally on it. At what distance from the edge of the wedge, will the 10 th fringe be observed by reflected
light?
[2073 Magh]
5. Newton’s rings formed by sodium light viewed normally. What is the order of dark ring which will have
double the diameter of 50th ring?
[2072 Chaitra]
6. Newton’s ring arrangement is used with a source emitting two wavelengths 𝜆1 and 𝜆2 . It is found that the nth
dark ring due to 𝜆1 coincides with (n+1)th dark ring due to 𝜆2 . Find the diameter of nth dark ring. (𝜆1 = 6 ×
10−5 𝑐𝑚, 𝜆2 = 5.9 × 10−5 𝑐𝑚 and radius of curvature of the lens R = 90cm)
[2073 Shrawan]

7. White light falls normally on a film of soapy water of thickness 5 × 10 𝑐𝑚 and refractive index 1.33.
Which wavelength in the visible region will be reflected most strongly?
[2073 Bhadra]
8. When oil is introduced into the space between the lens and the plate in Newton’s arrangement, the radius of
8th dark ring decreases from 1.8mm to 1.64mm. What is the refractive index of the oil? Assume the refractive
index of glass is greater than that of oil.
[2072 Ashwin]
9. Light of wavelength 6000A falls normally on a thin wedge shaped film of refractive index 1.4, forming
fringes that are 2mm apart. Find the angle of wedge.
[2070 Chaitra]

10. White light is incident on a soap film at an angle 𝑠𝑖𝑛 ( ) and the reflected light on examination by a
5
spectrometer shows dark bands. The consecutive dark bands corresponds to wavelength 6.1 ×
10−5 𝑐𝑚 and 6 × 10−5 𝑐𝑚. If 𝜇 = 1.33 for the film, calculate its thickness.
[2069 Ashad]
11. In a Newton’s ring experiment, the radius of curvature of the lens is 5cm and the lens diameter is 20mm. (a)
How many bright rings are produced? Assume that 𝜆 = 589𝑛𝑚. (b) How many bright rings would be
produced if the arrangement were immersed in water (𝜇 = 1.33)?
[2069 Chaitra]
12. Show that the diameters of the Newton’s rings when two surfaces of radii R 1 and R2 are placed in contact
1 1 4𝑛𝜆
are related by the relation − = 2 , where n is the integer number of the fringes.

[2071 Shrawan]
13. Two slits in Young’s interference experiment have width in the ration 4:9. Find the ratio of the intensity at
the maxima and minima in interference pattern.

14. A soap film 5× 10−5 𝑐𝑚 thick is viewed at an angle 35o to the normal. Find the wavelength of light in the
visible spectrum which will be absent from the reflected light. Given refractive index of film is 1.33.

15. Two line sources transmits micro-waves of wavelength 3cm is in phase. How far apart should they be in
order to produce a 10o angular separation between the first and second bright fringes on one side of the
central peak?
