1.0 PURPOSE:
The purpose of this document is to describe the work procedure to be adopted for Transverse contraction
joint and longitudinal joints.
.

2.0 SCOPE:
The scope covers the work method for initial & final groove cutting, preparation of transverse &

contractual joint.

3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS:

Technical Specification, Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, (MORTH) (Fifth Revision, 2013),
Drawing, BOQ & IS Code

4.0 MATERIALS:

a) Dimaond Saw Blade

b) Tikidan Tikiseal PU25

5.0 PROCEDURE:

Transverse contraction joint

Transverse contraction joints shall be cut at right angles to the direction of traffic flow or at an angle.
Contraction joints shall be provided at 4.5m intervals, except where the expansion joints are provided.
These joints shall be cut as soon the concrete has undergone initial hardening and is hard enough to take
the load of joint sawing machine without causing damage to the slab within 48 hours.
Contraction joints shall consist of a mechanical sawn joint groove, 3 to 5mm wide and one fourth to one
–third depth of the slab ±5mm or as stipulated in the approved drawing or as per BOQ Item.
Transverse contraction joints shall be provided in accordance with the approved drawing.

Cutting and filling for longitudinal joints
o Joint cutting will commence at the earliest possible after paving. Joint cutting area to be marked to
initial cut.
o Initial cut shall be as per approved drawing with the help of diamond saw blade. This cut will be
washed out immediately.
o Widening of the joint to a width as per CRD, Contraction joint & for longitudinal joints shall be
taken up after 2 to 3 weeks by cutting for thickness specified in CRD operated by concrete sawing
machine. Widening joint shall be washed immediately after the cut. Joint shall be cleaned with
compressed air and shall be dried completely before priming & sealing.
o Polysulphite Sealant shall then be filled specified depth and finished by tooling specified shape as
per manufacturer’s specification.
