HANDBALL HANDOUT

History

Team handball began as a field sport in the Scandinavian countries in the early
1900’s. Due to the severe winters the game was modified to become an indoor
sport in the late 1920’s. The indoor game fields teams of 7 players.

In the 1950’s team handball gained much attention in the United States. Team
Handball was later included into the Olympic Games for men in 1972 and women in
1976. This resulted in an added boost to team handball’s popularity.

Rules

1. A regulation game consists of two 30 minute halves. There are no time-outs

except for injuries or other major interruptions as determined by the officials.
2. A team consists of a goalie and six players.
3. Penalties for infraction of the rules are as follows: a warning followed by a
free-throw for the opponent. If the foul is repeated, flagrant, or could result
in injury, the player is suspended for 2 minutes, during which the team plays
short. A warming is NOT required prior to issuing a 2-minute suspension. If
the violation is flagrant, the official waives the warning and gives the
suspension. If the referee feels that an injury may have resulted from a
personal foul, the defensive player will be disqualified.
4. A player may not kick the ball or play the ball with the legs below the knees,
dive to play the ball on the floor, or charge into a defender.
• An infraction results in a free throw taken immediately without referee
handling at the point where the violation occurred.
• The thrower must have one foot in contact with the floor and must throw or
pass within 3 seconds.
• A goal may be scored directly from a free throw
• Defensive players must be at least 10 feet away (3 meters) and offensive
players must be outside the free throw line
5. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal crease
• Offensive players who begin their jump from outside the goal crease and
release the ball before landing may fall into the goal area but must exit
quickly.
• If an offensive player is on the line or in the circle with or without the ball,
the defense gets the ball for a free throw. If an offensive player scores a
goal while a teammate was on the line or in the circle, the goal does not
count
• If a defensive player gains an advantage by being in the goal crease, a
penalty throw is awarded. A ball in the goal area belongs to the goalie.
6. The goalkeeper is the only one allowed in the goal crease. The goalkeeper
cannot leave the goal area while holding the ball nor may this person pick up a
ball outside the goal crease and carry it back.
• The penalty for goalkeeper infractions is a free throw
• The 3 second/3 steps restrictions do not apply to the goalkeeper
• The goalkeeper is free to move outside the goal crease but must adhere to
the rules for court players

Game Rules
1. The game begins with a throw-off at center court by one team player.
• The offense lines up along the centerline with the ball in the middle.
• The throw off is repeated after a goal is scored
• Each team must be in its own half of the court, and opposing players must
be 3 meters away.

2. A ball going out-of-bounds over a sideline is put back in play by a throw-in at

the spot where it went out.
• The throw-in is taken within 3 seconds, one foot of the thrower remains
stationary on the sideline and the ball can be thrown with one or both hands.

3. if the ball crosses the end line and was last touched by a defensive player (not
the goalie), the offensive team is awarded a corner throw-in at the junction of
the end line and sideline with the same rules applying as a sideline throw-in.
4. A goal scores when the entire ball crosses the goal line inside the goal = 1 point.
• A goal may be scored from any throw

5. A referee’s throw results when the ball touches anything above the court, when
there is a simultaneous infringement of the rules, or when there is
simultaneous possession of the ball. A jump ball (like basketball) is taken
between any two opposing players where the infraction occurred. All other
players must be 3 meters away.
6. a penalty throw is awarded when a foul destroys a clear chance to score a goal,
the goalie carries the ball back into their own goal crease, a court player
intentionally plays the ball to their own goalie in the goal crease and the goalie
touches the ball, or a defensive player enters the goal crease to gain
advantage.
• A penalty throw is taken from the penalty line
• All players must be outside the free-throw line except the goalie that
defends.
• The goalie can defend from any place within 3 meters of the shooter
• The players has 3 seconds after the referee’s whistle

7. A goal throw is awarded when the ball crosses the end line off the goalkeeper,
or the ball is thrown over the end line by the attacking team.
• The goalie takes a throw-out from inside the goal area.

Defense

• Stay between the opponent and the basket
