1. What is textbook ?
According to Pope in Karen Bargate’s paper, a textbook is a book for teaching and
learning and it’s written primarily with students and teachers in mind.

According to O’naill (1991) indicates that textbook is efficient in terms of time and
money either its price is not too expensive which can be reached by all students or
low lesson preparation time.

According to Hutchinson and Torres (1994, p. 315) state that “the textbook is an
almost universal element of (English language) teaching.

According to Gray (2000) He defines textbooks as “ambassadorial cultural artifacts”

(Gray qtd. in Litz, 2005, p. 7) and says that students can improve their language skills
by using them as a useful means in order to stimulate discussions and cultural
arguments.

Sheldon (1988), Hutchinson and Torres (1994), Cunningsworth (1995), Cortazzi and
Jin (1999) and others share the opinion that textbooks are necessary tools for language
teaching and learning. On the other hand, textbooks can help teachers as well, serving
as a teaching programme and a support for less experienced ones to gain confidence,
test new methodologies, and become aware of the pedagogical issues.

Cortazzi and Jin (1999) refer to a textbook as a teacher, a map, a resource, a trainer
and an authority. . A textbook is viewed as a resource as it contains a set of materials
and activities available to the teacher from which one can choose. It can also be a
trainer for novice teachers who need valuable instructions, support and guidance. (

According to some experts above, A textbook is a book that contains comprehensive
information about a course or a subject that a student needs, to get through the
academic year. This has a set of chapters, question-answers, and exercises included in
the curriculum to improve the learning standards of a student.

Textbooks are not only helpful for the students but also helpful for new teachers with
their teaching course. It acts as a guide for the syllabus material they have to cover in
the entire academic year. Textbooks help teachers to design the lesson plan and enable
teaching and learning experience.

Further, textbooks help teachers to maintain uniformity in teaching standards for

different classes.

2. What is textbook analysis ?

Textbook analysis is the systematic analysis of the text materials including the
structure, the focus, and special learning assists. Teachers may assume the text is
“sacred" and follow it without thought or write it off as useless. Either approach is a
disservice to students. Many textbook publishers and writers have developed texts
with useful elements, if we are willing to figure out what they are

3. What is the role of textbook in ELT ?

Richards (2011) states that textbooks are essential component in most language
programs. Sometimes, they serve as the basis of language input that students receive
and the language practice that occurs in the classroom. They provide content of
lesson, the skills to be taught and the kind of language practice. They may act as a
fundamental supplement to the teacher’s instruction, but for students, textbooks are a
main source of language practice input that have been provided by the teacher. Also,
they provide some idea of how to teach in classroom and give a format of learning
process. Nowadays, most classes cannot carry on without using textbooks, thus no
one can ignore the vital role of textbook in the classroom. ( VOLUME 2, NO.1 DESEMBER

Analysis by Rias Wita Suryani )

4. What is criteria of good textbook ?

Cunningsworth (1995) Highlights the criteria of a good textbook as follows (1) aims
and approach (2) design and organization, (3) language content (4) skills, (5) topic,
(6) methodology, (7) teacher’s book logy, (8) practical consideration.
Alamri (2008) elaborated the more detail criteria. He adds other criteria including
language, topic, social, and cultural content, flexibility, and teachability, and testing.
(Litz, 2005) suggests a set of criteria as follows: (1) practical consideration, (2) layout
and design, (3) activities, (4) skills, (5) language type, (6) subject and content, (7)
conclusion/ overall activities.
Jahangard (2007) presents a criteria of a textbook, namely (1) explicit objectives in
the layout in an introduction, and implemented in the material, (2) good vocabulary
explanation and practice, (3) approaches educationally and socially accepted to target
community, (4) periodic review and test sections, (5) appropriate visual materials
available, (6) interesting topics and tasks, (7) clear instructions, (8) clear attractive
layout, print easy to read, (9)content clearly organized and graded, (10) plenty of
automatic language, (11) good grammar presentation and practice, (12) fluency
practice in all four skills, (13) encourage learners to develop own learning strategies
and to become independent in their language. (Developing Criteria of an English Textbook
Evaluation for Indonesian Senior High School, JURNAL TA’DIB, Vol 24 (2), 2021, Juli-
Desember)
Byrd (2001) also proposes criteria that can be used in evaluating and choosing a good
textbook. First, the fit between the material and the curriculum. Curriculum is a
guidance of teaching and learning process, including the purposes of the program and
the teaching procedures. Therefore, the fit between the material and the curriculum
will help the students to achieve the goal of the program. Second, the fit between the
material and the students. Textbook is used by the students. Therefore, the materials
should be fit with the students’ needs, so that they can learn the materials effectively.
Third, the fit between the material and the teacher because it is used by the teacher as
a guidance to teach students. Therefore, the materials in the textbook should help the
teacher in organizing the process of teaching and learning effectively. ( VOLUME 2,

5. What is importance of analyzing of textbook ?
6. What is readability ?
Readability means levels that describe the easiness of the text to be comprehended
while reading it (Dubay, 2004). At the first time, readability has been measured by
certain formulas. Nevertheless, formulas were discovered that they were not reliable
and valid predictors of text difficulty (e.g. Redish & Selzer, 1985; Bruce, Rubin &
Starr, 1981, as cited in Janan & Wray, 2012). Criticisms in readability formulas
caused experts to find other methods or approaches to measure the readability (Journal
of English Language Teaching ISSN 2302-3198. THE READABILITY OF STUDENTS’ TEXTBOOK
USED IN SEMANTIC AND PRAGMATIC COURSE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION
PROGRAM OF UNP Nur Hidayatillah1 and Yetty Zainil)

7. The function of readability.

Buckingham (1986,p.16) describes the function textbook as follows : a. the
opportunity to learn according their own pace. b. the opportunity to repeat or to
revisit. c. the possibility of undertaking an examination of memory. d. easy to make
note for later used. And e. special occasions that can be displayed by visual mean of
book.
