Title:
THE CORRELATION AMONG FIRST LANGUAGE AND
ENVIRONMENT INTO THE ACQUISITION OF EFL

Pertanyaan Bobot
CHAPTER I 25 %
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
● In a language acquisition process, it is undeniable that input is considered
as very important. It plays a role as ‘an obligatory entry point’ that
considerably contributes to the success of language acquisition.
● Most EFL learners, especially in Indonesia, are depending mainly upon
regular classroom learning to enhance their English ability
● Due to the condition of Indonesia which has low literacy (researched by
the International Student Assessment (PISA) released by the Organization
for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)).
1.2 Focus of the Study
● Observational
● New Knowledge

1.3 Research Question

1. Is there any influence of various regional languages for acquisition of
EFL?
2. Is there any of the learning environment for acquistion of EFL?

1.4 Objective of the Study

 To know the influence of various regional languange in one place for
acquisition of EFL
 To know how the influence of learning environment of EFL

1.5 Significance of the Study

● This research needs to be carried out in order to find out how the
relationship between mother tongue and learning conditions in the
classroom in particular in Indonesia in studying English
CHAPTER II 30%
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
(this part is mostly elaborated from each variable of your problem )

2.1 Theoritical Basis

A. Constructivism Philosophy. Efforts to improve students' abilities certainly
involve several factors, including the curriculum and learning methods which are
vital components that can make the learning process take place effectively and in
accordance with the goals that have been set.

B. Vygotsky's Constructivism Theory. Vygotsky emphasized the importance of

utilizing the environment in learning. The environment around students includes
people, culture, including experiences in that environment.

2.2 Framework Idea

Messages which support using the L1 are often accompanied by a warning
that if we ‘license’the use of the L1 in the foreign language classroom by taking
away positive pressures to usethe TL, this might ‘lead to an overuse of the L1 by
many teachers’. ).
In this study, we will have a framework for such a principled approach. It is
based on two distinctions made in the previous literature:
•S.-H. Kim & Elder (2005) distinguish between ‘core goals’ (teaching the
target language) and
‘framework goals’ (managing the classroom situation) as a basis for
analyzing teachers’use of the L1 and TL.
•Pennington (1995) distinguishes between teachers’ ‘compensatory
use’ of the L1(responding to a perceived problem) and ‘strategic use’ (serving
a pedagogical purpose). Both of these distinctions overlap (for example,
classroom management serves frameworkgoals but also, if the TL is used,
provides valuable input for core language learning goals;explaining grammar in
the L1 may be seen as either a planned strategy or a compensatoryresponse to a
communication problem). However, they provide possible orientation
forteachers in developing a strategic framework for L1 and TL use.

2.4 Review Related Studies

CHAPTER III 35 %
RESEARCH METHOD
3.1 Research Design
This research would use ethnograpich qualitative method. Qualitative a
systematic subjective approach used to describe life experiences and give them
meaning.

3.2 Setting
Ethnographic research is a qualitative method where researchers observe
and/or interact with a study’s participants in their real-life environment. Within
the field of usability, user-centred design and service design, ethnography is used
to support a designer’s deeper understanding of the design problem – including
the relevant domain, audience(s), processes, goals and context(s) of use.

3.3 Subject Of Research

The Subject would be Student of senior high school of MAN 2 KOTA
JAMBI with the sample of 3 class consist of 84 people.

3.4 Instrumentation and Method of Data Collection

There would be two technique of data collection :
Identify culture & review literature. We gain entrance to culture; immerse
self in culture; acquire informants; gather data through direct observation &
interaction with subjects

3.5 Trustworthiness Of The Data

To increase the trustworthiness of the study’s findings, the researcher employed
strategies suggested by Lincoln and Guba (1985). The researcher decreased
threats to credibility (quantitative researchers would use the term internal
validity) by triangulating data. To increase dependability (called reliability in
quantitative research), the researcher provided an audit trail by describing in
detail how data was collected, how categories 62 were derived, and how
decisions were made throughout the inquiry (Merriam, 1998).

The researcher used good rich, thick description (Merriam, 1998), thus enabling
other researchers to make decisions about transferability (known as external
validity or generalizability in quantitative research). To increase conformability
(known as objectivity in quantitative studies), the researcher attempted to control
for bias by constantly comparing data, searching the literature for examples of the
phenomenon, obtaining multiple viewpoints (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), searching
for negative instances of the phenomenon, and checking and rechecking data
(Marshall & Rossman, 1989).

Triangulation of data is of critical importance to the trustworthiness of qualitative

studies. As the study unfolded and particular pieces of information became
known, steps were taken to validate each information item against at least one
other source (e.g., a second interview) and/or a second method (e.g., an
observation in addition to an interview) (Denzin, 1989; Lincoln & Guba, 1985).
Using a second source or a second method can produce more accurate,
comprehensive, and objective findings (Silverman, 2006). For this study,
interviews and field notes were compared to ensure Trustworthiness.

3.6 Data Analysis

The analysis is to describe charateristic of student mother languange and
environment for acquistion of EFL. The data were then analyzed by conducting
some procedures. First, since the primary data were in the form of audio
recording, it was initially transliterated into written data through a
transcription process. Second, the data were coded by referring to the
coding process. The first stage of the coding process was reading the
transcription consisting of several pages to simplify into smaller segments
to highlight new information that was related to the topic of this
study. Afterward, we provided codes to the underlined utterances,
which considerably matched to the topic discussion. Following this, we
identify redundant codes and categorized them into fewer codes. Finally,
we reduced the codes again to create themes that were appropriate to the
objectives of this study
