THIRD SAUDI EXPANSION OF THE HOLY HARAM MAKKAH AND SURROUNDING AREAS
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
B. The applications of the grating includes but shall not be limited to, the following:
1. Galvanized steel grating within maintenance ducts and shafts to allow reach to all in-
stallations within the duct or shaft.
2. Stainless steel grating in ablution areas.
3. Glass-fiber-reinforced plastic gratings where indicated on Drawings.
C. Related Sections include, but shall not be limited to, the following:
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Detailed descriptions of materials and gratings systems. Show fabrication
and installation details for gratings:
B. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation details for gratings. Include plans, eleva-
tions, sections, and details of connections. Show anchorage and accessory items. Provide
templates for anchors and bolts specified for installation under other Sections.
1. For installed products indicated to comply with design loads, include structural analy-
sis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their
preparation.
C. Structural Calculations: For installed products indicated to comply with design loads, in-
clude structural analysis data signed and sealed by manufacturer.
E. Qualification Data: For firms and persons specified in "Quality Assurance" Article to
demonstrate their capabilities and experience. Include lists of completed projects with pro-
ject names and addresses, names and addresses of architects/ engineers and employers, and
any other information specified or required by Engineer.
1. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of gratings that
are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent.
B. Metal Bar Grating Standards: Comply with applicable requirements of the following:
1. Heavy-Duty Metal Bar Gratings: Comply with NAAMM MBG 532, "Heavy-Duty
Metal Bar Grating Manual."
A. Field Measurements: Where gratings are indicated to fit to other construction, verify di-
mensions of other construction by field measurements before fabrication and indicate meas-
urements on Typical Details. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to
avoid delaying the Work.
1.7 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate installation of anchorages for gratings, grating frames, and supports. Furnish
setting drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, con-
crete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors, that are to be embedded in con-
crete or masonry. Deliver such items to Project site in time for installation.
1.8 WARRANTY
1. All gratings are guaranteed to be of good material and workmanship and free from
defects that render it unserviceable for the use for which it is intended.
2. Warranty shall also include:

2.1 MANUFACTURERS
D. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTM A 653/A 653M, structural quality, Grade 230, with Z275
coating.
E. Welding Rods and Bare Electrodes: Select according to AWS specifications for metal alloy
to be welded.
A. Sheet, Strip, Plate, and Flat Bars: ASTM A 666, Type 316.
2.4 FASTENERS
A. General: Provide Type 304 or 316 stainless-steel fasteners for exterior use and zinc-plated
fasteners with coating complying with ASTM B 633, Class Fe/Zn 5, where built into exteri-
or walls. Select fasteners for type, grade, and class required.
B. Bolts and Nuts: Regular hexagon-head bolts, ASTM F 568M, Property Class 4.6; with hex
nuts, ASTM A 563M; and, where indicated, flat washers.
E. Expansion Anchors: Anchor bolt and sleeve assembly of material indicated below with ca-
pability to sustain, without failure, a load equal to six times the load imposed when installed
in unit masonry and equal to four times the load imposed when installed in concrete, as de-
termined by testing per ASTM E 488, conducted by a qualified independent testing agency.
2.5 FABRICATION
A. Shop Assembly: Fabricate grating sections in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize
field splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling
limitations. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces. Clearly mark
units for reassembly and coordinated installation.
B. Form from materials of size, thickness, and shapes indicated, but not less than that needed to
support indicated loads.
1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corro-
sion resistance of base metals.
2. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.
3. Remove welding flux immediately.
G. Provide for anchorage of type indicated; coordinate with supporting structure. Fabricate and
space anchoring devices to secure gratings, frames, and supports rigidly in place and to sup-
port indicated loads.
1. Fabricate toeplates to fit grating units and weld to units in shop, unless otherwise in-
dicated.
2. Toeplate Height: 100 mm, unless otherwise indicated.
A. Heavy duty gratings manufactured from hot-dip galvanized steel. Bearing bars and cross
bars are to be of rectangular section with size and spacing as per manufacturer's written rec-
ommendation for the span and type of loading indicated. Cross bars are to be locked at right
angles to and in the same plane as, the top surface of bearing bars. Properties shall be as fol-
lows:
1. Grating Mark: As indicated, but with bearing bar size not less than that required com-
plying with structural performance requirements.
2. Type: Pressure locked.
3. Traffic Surface for steel Bar Gratings: Plain.
4. Steel Finish: Hot-dip galvanized with a coating weight of not less than 550 g/sq. m of
coated surface.
5. Cut Outs: Fabricate cutouts in grating sections for penetrations indicated. Arrange
cutouts to permit grating removal without disturbing items penetrating gratings.
6. Fabricate removable grating sections with banding bars attached by welding to entire
perimeter of each section. Include anchors and fasteners of type indicated or, if not
indicated, as recommended by manufacturer for attaching to supports:
a. Provide not less than four weld lugs for each heavy-duty grating section, with
each lug shop welded to two bearing bars.
b. Furnish threaded bolts with nuts and washers for securing grating to supports.
B. Heavy duty gratings manufactured from stainless steel grade 316. Bearing bars and cross
bars are to be of rectangular section with size and spacing as per manufacturer's written rec-
ommendation for the span and type of loading indicated. Cross bars are to be locked at right
angles to and in the same plane as, the top surface of bearing bars. Properties shall be as fol-
lows:
1. Grating Mark: As indicated, but with bearing bar size not less than that required com-
plying with structural performance requirements.
2. Type: Pressure locked.
3. Traffic Surface for Stainless Steel Bar Gratings: Plain.
4. Cut Outs: Fabricate cutouts in grating sections for penetrations indicated. Arrange
cutouts to permit grating removal without disturbing items penetrating gratings.
5. Fabricate removable grating sections with banding bars attached by welding to entire
perimeter of each section. Include anchors and fasteners of type indicated or, if not
indicated, as recommended by manufacturer for attaching to supports:
a. Provide not less than four weld lugs for each heavy-duty grating section, with
each lug shop welded to two bearing bars.
b. Furnish threaded bolts with nuts and washers for securing grating to supports.
A. Ductile Cast Iron Grating: Medium and heavy-duty gratings non-rock type, manufactured
from ductile cast iron to ASTM A 536, grade 65-45-12 for medium duty and grade 80-55-06
for heavy duty. All castings shall be free from blow holes, shrinkage defects, swells, cracks
and other defects. Heavy duty gratings are to be capable of supporting axle loads specified
under Article “Performance Requirements” in this Section.
B. Fabricate cutouts in grating sections for penetrations indicated. Arrange cutouts to permit
grating removal without disturbing items penetrating gratings.
A. Steel Frames and Supports: Fabricate from structural-steel shapes, plates, and bars of weld-
ed construction to sizes, shapes, and profiles indicated and as necessary to receive gratings.
Miter and weld connections for perimeter angle frames. Cut, drill, and tap units to receive
hardware and similar items.
1. Galvanize frames and supports for all exterior and interior applications of steel
frames.
B. Stainless Steel Frames and Supports: Provide Type 316 stainless steel frames with stainless
steel grating. Provide frames of welded stainless steel lugs for building in adjoining con-
crete.
C. Frames and Supports for Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Gratings: Fabricate from glass-
fiber-reinforced plastic shapes of sizes, shapes, and profiles indicated and as necessary to
receive gratings. Miter connections for perimeter angle frames. Cut, drill, and tap units to
receive hardware and similar items.
1. Unless otherwise indicated, use shapes made from same resin as gratings.
2. Equip units indicated to be cast into concrete or built into masonry with integral
anchors.
D. Equip units with integrally welded anchors for casting into concrete or building into mason-
ry.
1. Unless otherwise indicated, space anchors 900 mm o.c. and provide minimum anchor
units in the form of steel straps 32 mm wide by 6 mm thick by 200 mm long.
2.10 FINISHES
C. Galvanizing: For those items indicated for galvanizing, apply zinc coating by the hot-dip
process complying with ASTM A 123.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
A. Fastening to In-Place Construction: Provide anchorage devices and fasteners where neces-
sary for securing gratings to in-place construction. Include threaded fasteners for concrete
and masonry inserts, through-bolts, lag bolts, and other connectors.
B. Cutting, Fitting, and Placement: Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing
gratings. Set units accurately in location, alignment, and elevation; measured from estab-
lished lines and levels and free from rack.
C. Provide temporary bracing or anchors in formwork for items that are to be built into con-
crete or masonry.
D. Fit exposed connections accurately together to form hairline joints. Weld connections that
are not to be left as exposed joints but cannot be shop welded because of shipping size limi-
tations. Do not weld, cut, or abrade the surfaces of exterior units that have been hot-dip gal-
vanized after fabrication and are for bolted or screwed field connections.
1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corro-
sion resistance of base metals.
2. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.
3. Remove welding flux immediately.
A. General: Install gratings to comply with recommendations of referenced metal bar grating
standards that apply to grating types and bar sizes indicated, including installation clearanc-
es and standard anchoring details.
B. Attach removable units to supporting members with type and size of clips and fasteners in-
dicated or, if not indicated, as recommended by grating manufacturer for type of installation
conditions shown.
C. Attach non-removable units to supporting members by welding where both materials are the
same; otherwise, fasten by bolting as indicated above.
A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for installing gratings. Use manufacturer's
standard stainless-steel anchor clips and hold-down devices for bolted connections.
A. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and repair
galvanizing to comply with ASTM A 780.
