An integrated curriculum is described as one that connects different areas of study by cutting
across subject-matter lines and emphasizing unifying concepts. Integration focuses on making
connections for students, allowing them to engage in relevant, meaningful activities that can be
connected to real life. An integrated curriculum aims to connect the theory learned in the classroom,
with practical, real-life knowledge and experiences. The practical and experiential learning aspect of an
integrated curriculum is facilitated through service-learning.
2. What are the different approaches, models, and types of curriculum integration?
There are three approaches to integration and these are multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary. A multidisciplinary approach focuses primarily on different disciplines. Teachers, who
employ this approach, may create standards from the disciplines within a theme. There are many
different ways to create a multidisciplinary curriculum, and they tend to differ in the level of intensity of
the integration effort. It can be recalled that the previous Restructured Basic Education. The
Interdisciplinary Approach, in this approach to integration, teachers organize and capsulize the
curriculum around common learning across disciplines to emphasize interdisciplinary skills and concepts.
In Transdisciplinary Integration approach, teachers design a curriculum within student needs and
concerns. Students develop life skills as they apply disciplinary and interdisciplinary skills in a real-life
context. Two routes lead to transdisciplinary integration, namely: project-based learning and negotiating
the curriculum. Furthermore, the other Types of Integrated Curriculum are Connected, Sequenced,
Shared and Webbed and the five levels of curriculum integration identified in this study are identified as
departmentalized, reinforcement, complementary or shared units, webbed, and integrated themes.
3. How can you apply integration along with multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary
approaches?
4. Which curriculum integration approach would best suit the different types of learners in diverse
classroom contexts?
Multidisciplinary approach as it was focuses primarily on the different disciplines and the diverse
perspectives, they bring to illustrate a topic, theme or issue. Thus, it will give a chance to encourage
answering and sharing of different ideas. It will help learners to open up and learn more because not all
students can easily understand the topic. Everyone is unique and have their own strength and weakness.
One student maybe good in math but not in communication yet the other one maybe be bad at
numbers yet good in communication and expressing his/her ideas. Thus, offering different sub-discipline
would address students’ needs like the example you can integrate math in your topic or explain it with
relating to numbers, if possible, to cater student attention and promote active learning.
The integrated curriculum was most appropriate in all lessons or course disciplines because all
subjects matter and every learner are unique, they have a different need, strength. One maybe good in
numbers yet bad in communication and the other maybe bad in numbers but good in communication
thus integrating integrated curriculum are appropriate in all lesson/course discipline. Additionally,
combining different subject areas and teaching them in relation to a singular theme or an idea improves
learners’ achievement and leads to an increase in learners standardized scores. Moreover, it was an
innovative teachers and school responsibility and aim to integrate all the possible course discipline/sub-
discipline and lesson for students benefits as it encourages active participation in relevant real-life
experiences, it focuses on basic skills, content, and higher-level thinking, accommodates a variety of
learning styles, theories and multiple intelligences and etc.
Share an observation of curriculum integration application in class or in the school. What
life lessons and values have you realized and learned? (Answer must be minimum of 300
words)
Applying an integrated curriculum in class is the best way to teach the students and for them to
learn in a fun and exciting way. By observing, I learn that in my class when I make connections with my
students during our subject in science, they are more engaged. For example, one time I ask them a
question but I didn't provide any solution and I challenged them to provide an answer, I was surprised
that they came up with an answer that was correct by just gathering the idea of their classmates. With
this I was amazed with their connections and I found the technique effective.
I observed that applying integrated curriculum is also preparing the student and us as a teacher
in the real world. I see that by using this technique students began to trust their classmates more and
they are building a bond with me. They began to see me not just as their teacher but as a friend because
I gave them trust to find a solution. It was a great experience and since I began using this technique, I
became close with my students and they are now more engaged in my subject more than ever.
By applying integrated curriculum in my class, I learned a lesson that I can use in my life. First,
because of this I began to trust more the knowledge of other people when we were both doing the
same work. Second, it serves as a testament that anything can be done if we work together as a team.
Lastly, I realized that it is more fun to learn if you did it with your peers. I realized these values in life
because I apply the integrated curriculum in my class.
