Element 3 Case Study: Change in Organizational Culture at Jaguar

1. Introduction
The organizational culture is described by a lot of events in human resource
management. These events include a lot of activities such as projects, management
and set of actions that are taken by the group of people working under the same
organization. Organizational culture is basically a collective thinking of a bunch of
people that maintains a unique atmosphere of a company.

Corporate culture was common in the past that mainly included community work and
projects on a relatively smaller scale but now corporate culture has evolved into
organizational culture. The organizational culture provides a wider range of opportunity
because it involves both profit making organizations and non-profit organizations. Profit
making organizations include: business, private institutions and food manufacturers
whereas non-profit organizations include charity work, schemes that benefit the poor
and awareness campaigns.

2. Background of Jaguar’s Cultural transition

Jaguar was originated in the UK and is very famous for developing top class and luxury
cars. In order to cope with the future they thought of making a change in their culture.
They wanted to manufacture cars that would be as good as the present day cars. The
organizational culture is basically the attitude of employees and the policies maintained
by the company. Jaguar has followed a culture of giving less freedom to their workers
while other companies have given a bit freedom to their employees so that they can
share their own ideas and make changes according to them.

3. Cultural Changes in Automobile Industry

The automobile industry had to make changes to its culture because of the change in
the world’s culture over the past few years. Henry Ford was the founder of Ford which
was very famous in the early days of twentieth century. He had maintained a culture of
manufacturing identical cars on a regular basis. He did not wanted to have any change
to this culture because the employees were given their tasks and worked accordingly.
The western world had made their mark and was kind of ruling the automobile industry
meanwhile; Japanese cars broke in to the automobile industry and were praised
because they provided comfort and low cost at the same time. They produced the
concept of TQM (total quality management) which ensured quality cars and helped
them manufacture cars at a high speed. This culture was totally against the culture of
Ford credit to some great discipline shown by the Japanese employees.

4. Response to Cultural Change

The companies were needed to be innovative and they required enhancement in their
ideas because the competition of cars was increased. This was the time to forget the
culture of producing identical cars at a low pace and bring a culture that would create a
variation in the cars. They were now supposed to manufacture cars with different sizes
and capacity. The companies were inspired by the Japanese culture and they hired
employees having different but extraordinary skills that would bring flexibility while
cooperating with other employees.

Jaguar started manufacturing Ford at their plant located in Halewood in the UK because
of the worldwide growth of Ford that brought them ahead of Jaguar. This was the same
place where the veteran model: Ford Escort had been manufactured under the same
culture that was followed by Ford. Ford was sick of their culture now and they decided
to quit Fordism and create a new culture inspired by the Japanese. They wanted their
employees to show some skills and be creative in their approach.

5. Jaguar’s Changing Culture and Strategy

In an attempt to introduce a new organizational culture, jaguar started changing their
construction policies and started bringing changes in order to achieve the required
culture. In order to achieve the business aim all an organization needs is proper
planning and direction. Similarly, applying appropriate methods and procedures are also
helpful in order to develop a strategy.

The employees must change their way of thinking and they are supposed to think
creatively. The employees of Ford must forget the Fordism and adopt a new culture in
which they should not have to wait for an order to work but apply their own opinions
among their co-workers and try to implement them. They should also apply total quality
management in order to manufacture with high quality and speed. The implementation
of TQM would help the employees to manufacture at a higher speed and better quality.
This changed culture has encouraged the employees to work in groups and share their
ideas; it was producing much better results than working at a single position and waiting
for a task to be assigned.

Production of jaguar at Halewood was based on following ideas:

 This decision will cause the production of high quality cars and it would also give
the job satisfaction to the employees.
 This facility will create a better environment and there will always be a room for
improvement. The workers will have much more passion toward their job.
 In order to bring the variety in the employment, the management will have to
educate and train their employees for perfect results.
 The company will expand and it will create more room for jobs, condition is that
the staff and management have to show some unity.
 This facility will also support the environment and the local community.

6. Conclusion
The ford plant in Halewood required a change in culture and they decided to adopt the
Japanese culture knowing that it would benefit the company and it did. Also the decision
of manufacturing Jaguar at Ford plant located in Halewood was showing good results.
Jaguar was a type of company in which assembling cars was not an easy tasks
because it needed a lot of details and it could have suffered a lot under ford but the
cultural change in the ford did not let that happen and the application of TQM developed
by the Japanese culture helped them manufacture Jaguar in the Halewood with ease.
