CHAPTER 4:
HUMAN FLOURISHING IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1. How is technology a mode of revealing?
Technology shows so much more about the human person and the world; a portal
to information.
2. In your daily experience of technology, what else is revealed to you aside from its own
functions?
Aside from learning from the device, we also understood ourselves as a person
more. By knowing what are our capabilities and handling responsibilities for us not to be
controlled by technology.
3. Why should technology be questioned?
Technology is complex, is has no specific definition. We should question
technology because it is as what our course likes to name it, ‘Undefined’.
4. How is questioning the piety of thoughts?
Piety means obedience, submission or something that follows after. Questioning
is the piety of thought because we assume and more precisely we do not know everything.
That’s why most of our Eureka moments are often followed by questioned of our own.
5. How does art provide a way out of enframing?
With art, we are better able to see the poetic in nature in reality. It leads us away
from calculative thinking and towards meditative thinking. Through meditative thinking,
art provide a way out of enframing.

DEVELOPMENT
1. What is the main objective of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?
To eradicate poverty by 2030.
2. What is the standardized unit that measures resource use and waste?
“Global Hectares” (Annually)
3. What is the standard response to eradicating poverty?
Growth
4. What is the threshold of the Earth for adequately sustaining life?
Economic Development
5. According to the majority of people in middle- and high- income countries, what puts the
planet and society at risk?
Over Consumption
6. How many hectares should each of us consume annually based on the resources available
in the planet?
1.8 “Global Hectares” Annually
7. What are two indicators of the quality of life given the article?
Life Expectancy and Literacy Rate
8. What crisis in the planet would force us to slow down if we do not do so voluntarily?

9. According to Hickel, what must be done instead of urging poor countries to “catch up”

Think of ways to get rich-countries to “Catch Down” to more appropriate levels
of development.
10. How would the different areas of the world react to the idea of “de-development’?
Strong rallying cry in the Global South. But it will be tricky to sell to Westerners.

BIODIVERSITY

5. Will you eat GMOs? Why or why not?

Yes. In research, there is this thing called ‘Research Ethics’, wherein it states that
no research shall harm anyone or anything in any form. If these Genetically Modified
Organisms are already being used, it means that it passed the ethical test. Even if it has its
cons, still it is a product of intellectual progress, and why shouldn’t we eat it?
