1. What role does the environment play in addressing the needs of a society?

The environment provides natural products specifically the food supplies, source
of wood, herbal medicine, and energy, which can subsequently be a base of creating
opportunities, recreation and tourism, which can help big in addressing the needs of
society.
2. How can people maintain the rich biodiversity in nature?
Attract ‘good’ insects by planting pollen and nectar plants. Maintain wetlands by
conserving water and reducing irrigation. Avoid draining water bodies on your property.
Construct fences to protect riparian areas and other sensitive habitats from trampling and
other disturbances.
3. In your own words, how is an organism’s genome manipulated?
Both genetic engineering and selective breeding are considered genetic
manipulation. Genetic engineering puts the power of manipulation in the hands of
mankind because scientists manipulate the DNA themselves. The ability to manipulate
the genome and gene expressions of organisms requires scientists to first develop the
tools to manipulate DNA, and then develop methods to introduce DNA that has been
modified into the organism’s genome.
4. What are the pros and cons of genetically modifying crops?

Pros:
They generally offer better overall quality and taste.
They produce improved seeds.
They are more resistant to diseases.
They come with environmental benefits.
They offer more nutrition benefits.
They hold promise.
Cons:
They contribute to environmental damage.
They create gene migration.
They bring economic value.
They contribute to growth in allergic reactions in the general population.
They can result to lowered resistance to antibiotics.
They have financial impacts on the economy.
5. Will you eat GMOs? Why or why not?

Yes. In research, there is this thing called ‘Research Ethics’, wherein it states that
no research shall harm anyone or anything in any form. If these Genetically Modified
Organisms are already being used, it means that it passed the ethical test. Even if it has
its cons, still it is a product of intellectual progress, and why shouldn’t we eat it?
