MATH 4 SLM Week 7 Final 1

This document discusses differentiating between perimeter and area, converting between square centimeters and square meters, and includes examples and activities to practice these concepts. It defines perimeter as the distance around a shape and area as the space within a shape, and provides formulas and steps to convert between square units like changing 640,000 square centimeters to 64 square meters. The activities involve calculating perimeters and areas of different shapes, as well as converting between square centimeter and square meter measurements.

QUARTER 3 – MODULE 7

Differentiating Perimeter from

Area and
Converting Square Centimeters
to Square Meters and Vice Versa
PART I.
M4ME - IIIj -53: Differentiates perimeter from area

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module is written to further improve your critical thinking and Problem solving
skills. You have already learned about the meaning of a perimeter, and now you will
explore about area and its difference from perimeter.

B. Illustrative Examples:
Let us review first some of the concepts that can help you understand the difference
between perimeter and area.

Comparison Chart

Area Perimeter
Definition -It is the measurement of the -It is the measurement of the
space inside a shape. distance around a shape.
-It is the number of square units -It is the distance around the
inside a shape. outside of a shape.
Unit used We use square units. We used centimeter units.
e.g. e.g.
2 cm or 2 square centimeters 2 cm
Usage For example: For example:
-to carpet the whole room -to put a fence around the garden
-to cover tiles a whole bedroom -to put a lace around a curtain
-to mop the whole floor area -to walk around the quadrangle
-to cover a bed with bedsheet -to jog around a circle
-to put rubberized mat in a -to put barbed wire around the
classroom farm

The illustration below shows the concrete representation of area

and perimeter.

Distance around a closed Space or region occupied by a figure.

Closed figure.

There are two word problems given below. Try to analyze if which one needs
for you to solve for the distance and which one needs to know the measurement to
be used to cover a certain thing.

1
Directions: Read and answer the word problems below. Write your answers on your
answer sheet.

1. Jeremiah walked from his house to school, then to the park, and then back home.
How far did he walk?

School
100m
105m
Park

House 200

2. My teacher decided to cover her table with plastic. Her table measures 45 cm long
and 35 cm wide. How many meters of plastic did she buy?
Questions:
What did you do to solve each problem? Why?
Yes, Good job kids, in problem no. 1, you are going to solve for the perimeter
because the problem asked you for the distance walked by Jeremiah. It means it is
around a closed figure.

You did right kids! In problem number 2, you are going to solve for the area.
The problem asked for the number of meters the teacher needs to buy.

Here ‘show?

Problem#1
P=S1+S2+S3
P=105+200+100
P=405m
M is the unit of measure used
Let P, the perimeter,
S1, first side
S2, second side and
S3, third side.

Problem#2
A=LxW
A=45x35
A=1,575m2
2
m2is the unit used because 𝑚𝑥𝑚 means 𝒎𝟏𝒙𝒎𝟏(add the exponent)
Based on the given examples,
Perimeter is the distance around a closed figure. It is the sum of the length of
the sides of a polygon. In perimeter, measurement express in units.

Area is the space or region occupied by a closed figure. To solve for the area,
use the formula A= LxW measurement express in square units.

Note:
Area is the 2- dimensional space or region occupied by a
closed figure, while perimeter is the distance around a closed
figure.

Part I

M4ME - IIIj -54: Converts sq.cm to sq. m and vice versa

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module is all about converting square centimeters to square meters and
vice versa. The used of square meters are for measuring rooms, houses, blocks of
land. Parking space and so many. While square centimeters are for measuring small
areas such as on drawings. It is very important to know and how to get the
measurement of a place. Are you ready and excited to learn about measuring using
square meters?
B. Illustrative Examples:
1.Lian and Jay are busy cleaning the playground of Castro- Elementary School.
If the area of the school playground is 640 000 sq. cm, what is its equivalent in
square meters?
How will you solve the problem?
Study this:
10 000 sq.cm= 1 sq. m.
640 000 sq. cm= ________sq. m
Solution: 640 000 sq. cm= 640 000 sq. cm x 1 sq. m
10 000 sq. cm.
= 640 000 sq. m
10 000
= 64 sq. m

2. Lorena wanted to find out how many square centimeters there are n 14 sq. m
Below is the process to convert bigger square units to smaller square units.

1 sq. m = 10 000 sq. cm

14 sq. m= ________________________sq. cm
3
Solution:14 sq. m= 14 sq. m x 10 000 sq. cm
1 sq. cm
=14 x 10 000 sq. cm
=140 000 sq. cm

Note:
1 square meter(m2) is equal to 10000 square centimeters

Part II. Activities
