Human Breathing System
Have you ever imagined if we do not have the ability to breathe even for just a minute? Of course, that
would be very difficult. The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen for the
blood to flow and to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body.
Activity 1: Breathing
Try to breathe in and out. Afterwards, try to imagine what is happening to your lungs inside your body.
Guide questions:
1. What do you think/feel happens to your lungs when you breathe in?

2. What do you think/feel happens to your lungs when you breathe out?

Why does air move in when we inhale? Why does air move out when we exhale? What is responsible for
moving in and out of air inside our body?
The movement of air is due to air pressure in the body and the environment.
Atmospheric Pressure
Pressure (P) is a force (F) divided by the area (A)
over which the force is exerted. P = F/A
Pressure exerted by the gas particles in the
atmosphere is called atmospheric pressure.
The more gas particles, the greater pressure.
The smaller the area, the greater the pressure.
Air particles move from area of higher
pressure to lower pressure.
Development:
Now that you already know how it is possible for us to make air move in and move out of our body, we will
trace the pathway it takes. I hope that you still remember the parts of the respiratory system from your
elementary days.
During inhalation (breathing in), the air enters the nose through the nostrils, which is filtered by the
coarse hairs. The hairs trap dust and other particles. It ensures that the air that will pass through after the
nostrils is clean, warm, and moist. Air now goes to the pharynx (throat) and moves down the larynx (voice
box). From the larynx, air passes down the trachea in the chest cavity. The trachea divides into two
branches called bronchi. Each bronchus is made up of two narrow rings of cartilage that go to the lungs.
Each bronchus branches off into smaller tubes called bronchioles inside the alveoli. It is in the alveoli
where the exchange of gases takes place.
Air moves from the nose (nasal cavity) and mouth (oral cavity), and leads to the pharynx,
larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and then into the alveoli or air sacs.
a. Pharynx = the intersection where the paths for air and food cross
b. Larynx = vocal cords (voice box); stops food to enter the trachea
c. Trachea = windpipe; serves as passageway of air into the lungs
d. Bronchi = two large branching stem that connects the trachea to the separate lungs
e. Bronchioles = little stems; hair like tubes that connect to the alveoli
f. Alveoli = tiny bubble-like structures; site for gas exchange in the lungs

Exercise # 3: Air Pathway
Now that you have learned the essential parts of the breathing system, let us see whether you can
trace the pathway of air during inhalation. Fill in the box with arrow with appropriate answer.
Choose your answer on the box provided.

Summary:
The system responsible for the taking in of oxygen in our body is the respiratory system.
The air moves in and moves out of our body because of changing air pressure controlled by the
movement of our diaphragm.
The respiratory system is composed of the lungs and the air passageways such as the nose, pharynx,
larynx, trachea, bronchi. The bronchioles and alveoli are parts of the lungs.
The alveoli are the site where exchange of gases occurs.

FOLLOW ME!
Follow the following directions given below:
1. Do the inhalation and exhalation process three (3) times.
2. Try to inhale for ten (10) seconds then exhale.
3. Try not to exhale for ten (10) seconds then inhale.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened when you not breathe until ten seconds?

Calming Breath
1. Take a long, slow breath in through your nose, first filling your lower lungs, then your upper lungs.
2. Hold your breath to the count of "three."
3. Exhale slowly through pursed lips, while you relax the muscles in your face, jaw, shoulders, and
stomach.

Try this breathing technique to calm yourself when you are in a very emotional state and trying to avoid
conflict from it.
Post-Test:
Read each statement carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer and place your answer on the space
provided before each number. Just answer based on your knowledge. Check your answers later.
