About FTF Merlo™ (1998–2004) is an interpretation of the types of Ismael Merlo shown in Muestras
de los punzones y matrices de letra que se funde en el obrador de la Imprenta Real, Madrid, 1799.
Having a Spanish flavour with french influences, Merlo is a true revival that has adapted well
to current technology. It was formerly a typeface that was only available in a technology
that is now obsolete. Conceived as a book face, Merlo consists of Roman and Italic weights,
both with old style and lining figures (text and table) as well as small caps. Merlo was selected
as one of the ‘favorite fonts of 2004’, (a selection of favorites promoted by Typographica).

typography is both the art and technique of arranging

type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type
glyphs are created and modified using a variety of
illustration techniques. The layout of type involves the
selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading
(line spacing), letterspacing (tracking) and kerning.
Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors,
typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic
book artists, clerical workers, etc….

Typography traces its origins to the first punches and dies used to make seals and currency in
ancient times. The first known movable type printing artifact is probably the Phaistos Disc,
though its real purpose remains disputed. The item dates between 1850 bc and 1600 bc, back
to the Minoan age.
