Bayonet Neil-Concelman (BNC) connectors were designed for military applications, but are used
widely in video and RF applications to 2 GHz. BNC connectors have a slotted outer conductor and a
plastic dielectric that causes increasing losses at higher frequencies. BNC connectors are usable
BNC
above 4 GHz as long as the slots radiate signals; however, these devices may not be mechanically
stable to 10 GHz. Both 50 ohm and 75 ohm BNC connectors are available. BNC connectors are also
known as bayonet navy connectors or baby Neil connectors.
Type F connectors have a screw-type coupling and frequency range up to 1.5 GHz. Applications
Type F
include CATV, TV, and antennas.
Type N connectors include an integrated gasket to protect against environmental ingress and create
Type N an air gap between the center and the outer conductor. They primarily have 50 ohm impedance, but
75 ohm versions for CATV, are available.
QMA connectors are quick-disconnecting devices that have the same internal construction as SMA
QMA
connectors.
Subminiature-A (SMA) connectors are intended for use on semi-rigid cables in components. They
SMA directly interface the cable dielectric without air gaps. They are not intended for permanent
connections.
1.6 / 5.6 connectors are mechanically sturdy devices that feature a coupling mechanism. They are
often used with equipment that requires resistance against environmental and mechanical stress. 1.6 /
1.6 / 5.6
5.6 connectors are also suitable for handling RF analog and digital signals in telecommunications
systems.
1.0 / 2.3 coaxial connectors are designed for telecommunications systems that require sub-miniature
1.0 / 2.3
50 ohm and 75 ohm slide-on or screw-on connectors.

Male connectors or plugs are often referred to as header or free connectors. In coaxial RF
connectors, the plug is normally the movable portion and is usually attached to a cable or
Male / Plug removable sub-assembly. In shell type multiple-contact connectors, the plug usually contains
the socket contacts and is mounted on the "hot" (rack) side of the system. Plugs mate with
receptacles, jacks, outlets, etc.
Female connectors or jacks are connecting devices into which plugs are inserted to make
Female / Jack
circuit connections.
Straight The connector does not bend.
Right Angle The connector is bent at a right angle.

Flanges are used to connect waveguide sections to one another or terminate waveguide components. They have
circular, rectangular, or square profiles and are often plated with cadmium, nickel, rhodium, silver, or tin. There are
several basic types of flanges. Cover or plate flanges are flat, square, rectangular etc. Choke flanges are UG-style
devices with an O-ring groove and choke cavity. They are often used to minimize the effects of flange
discontinuity. Connector pressurized rectangular (PDR) flanges meet Electronic Industry Association (EIA)
specifications and are used in many non-military applications. Mill-back flanges are made with the opening of the
flange face equal in size to the inside of the waveguide, which is soldered into a larger milled opening at the rear
of the flange.
Referred to the IEC normalisation, for rectangular Waveguide it is possible identify basically 4 type of mechanical
profile for flange adaptor. PDRxx, UDRxx, PBRxx, UBRxx.
Where:
1° letter identify if the flange is flat or with gasket (P with gasket, U flat)
2° letter identify the external form of flange (D Rectangular, B Square)
3° letter and related number identify type of WG and dimension of WG hole.
