Lesson Plan in Rational Algebraic Expressions

This lesson plan is for an 8th grade math class on rational algebraic expressions. It includes objectives, references used, competencies covered, and procedures for the lesson. The teaching procedure involves preliminary activities, working on an example problem adding and subtracting rational expressions, analyzing examples of where rational expressions are used, working through an application problem solving for the speed of the wind given rates of airplane travel, and assessing student understanding with additional practice problems.

LESSON PLAN IN MATH 8

I. OBJECTIVES
a. Solve problems involving rational algebraic expressions

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a. Topic: Addition and Subtraction of Rational Algebraic Expressions
b. References: Smart Class Math 8
c. Author: Vibal Group, Inc.
d. Competency:
 Solve problems involving rational algebraic expressions
(M8AL-Id-2)
e. Core Values: Humble

III. TEACHING PROCEDURE

a. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Attendance
 Motivation

b. Activity
Title: Slowly but Surely
Instructions: Perform the indicated operations.
1. (1/3(a + 2b)) - (2/5(a - 2b)) + (7/4(a2 - 4b2))
c. Analysis
Guide questions:
1. What are rational equations and where can you apply them?

d. Abstraction
Rational Expressions

Many mathematical problems involve rational expressions.

Consider the problem: A tank can be filled by pipe B in 20 minutes
more time than pipe A can fill the same tank. If both pipes are open, it
takes 24 minutes to fill the tank. How long will it take each pipe to fill the
tank?
Solution: Let x be the time it takes pipe A to fill the tank.
x + 20 be the time it takes pipe B to fill the tank
The given information is shown in the table below.

Rate Time (Minutes) Part Filled

Pipe A 1/x 24 24/x
Pipe B 1/x + 20 24 24/x + 20

The part filled by pipe A added to the part filled by pipe B is equal to
1. Thus, we have the equation (24/x) + (24/x + 20) = 1.

Solving for
x, we have
But x cannot less than 0, so the only solution is 40. if x = 40, then x + 20
= 40 + 20 = 60. Therefore, pipe A can fill the tank in 40 minutes, while pipe B
can fill the tank in 60 minutes.

e. Application
Instructions: Solve the problem.
1. An airplane can fly at a rate of 500 kph in calm air. It can fly
2575 km with the wind and fly 2425 km against the wind with the
same time. Find the speed of the wind.

f. Assessment
Instructions: Solve the following problem.
1. The denominator of a fraction is 4 more than the numerator. If
both the numerator and the denominator of the fraction are increased
by 1, the resulting fraction is 1/2. Find the fraction.
2. Irene and Joy can clean their backyard in 4 hours. It takes
Irene 7 hours to do the job alone. How long would it take Joy to do
the same job?

g. Agreement
Instructions: Solve the following problem.
1. A boat that can travel at 40 km/h in still water travels 32 km
downstream in the same amount of time that it takes to travel 28 km
upstream. What is the speed of the current?
2. The age of Joshua’s father is twice Joshua’s age. In eight
years, the ratio of Joshua’s age to his father’s age will be 4/7. Find
their present age.
