Lesson Plan in Fractions

This lesson plan outlines teaching division of fractions and mixed numbers to 6th grade math students. It includes objectives of dividing simple and mixed fractions, solving routine and non-routine problems involving fractions, and creating word problems involving fractions. Sample problems are provided for students to practice multiplication of fractions as a review. The lesson then demonstrates how to set up and solve a word problem involving dividing a mixed number by a fraction. Students are given practice problems to solve word problems involving dividing fractions.

1. 3/7 x 45 2/7
2. 12 1/9 x 5/9
3. 1 3/8 x 5/8
4. 5/11 x 3 7/11
5. 4/15 x 2 13/15

c. Analysis
Guide questions:
1. How do you divide fractions?
2. How do you solve problems involving division of fractions?

d. Abstraction
Division of Fractions
The officers of the different clubs are preparing banners that can be used
for an organization fair to promote and invite interested members. Each banner
requires 1 3/4 m of fabric. How many banners can be used using a 7-m fabric?

The problem requires division of 7 by 1 3/4. We can express the problem

using the number sentence
17 ÷ 1 3/4 = ?
Solution:
7 ÷ 7/4 = ? change the mixed number to improper fraction

7 x 4/7 = ? change the operation from division to multiplication and the divisor by its reciprocal
7 x 4/7 = 4 multiply the numerators over the product of the denominators

Answer: Thus, 4 banners can be made out of the 7-m fabric.

e. Application
Instructions: Solve the problem:
1. The serving size for the cereals that Kris likes to eat for
breakfast is 3/4 cup. How many servings are there in a box that
holds 24 1/2 cups?

f. Assessment
Instructions: Solve the following.
1. An 8/10 m of wood is cut equally into shorter pieces of 1/5 m
each. How many shorter pieces will there be?
2. How many 1/2 cups servings are there in a package of cheese
that contains 5 1/4 cups altogether?

g. Agreement
Instructions: Solve the following.
1. A 6 1/2 kg bag of dog food is divided evenly between 2 dogs.
How many kilograms of dog food go to each?
2. Mica has 2 3/4 cups of salad. How many 1/2 cups servings
