SPECIAL KEYS

A special key or media key is a keyboard key that performs a special


function. Special keys include:
Space Bar - The space bar is the longest key on the keyboard. It is used to
insert a blank space after each word and after punctuation marks.
Tab Key – The purpose of the tab key is to move the cursor to any desired
position.
The modifier keys change or modify the functions of the character keys.
These include:
(a) Caps Lock - when the caps lock light is on every letter will be typed in
capital letters.
(b) Shift Keys - The shift keys allows the selection of capital letters when
depressing the alphabet characters or selecting characters above numeric
keys.

System Keys include:


(a) Control (CTRL) - keys are used in combination with another.
(b) Alternate (Alt) - keys to perform specific task.
(c) Esc - The ESC button located at the top left hand corner of the keyboard
allows you to quit or exit a task.
(d) The Enter Key - The enter key is used to enter command or to move to
the beginning of the next line or paragraph.
(e) Backspace - The backspace key is used to remove the character to the
left of the cursor.
(f) Scroll Lock - temporarily stops the scrolling of text.
(g) Toggle Key - is any key that is used to initiate the action and the same key
removes it. When a toggle key is active a light is displayed. The toggle keys
on the keyboard are: caps lock, num lock, insert and scroll lock.
(h) PrntScrn (Print screen) - allows you to take a picture of the computer
screen and copy it to the clipboard.
Default Keys
Delete Key – used to delete a character to the left of the cursor.
Home Key - moves the cursor to the beginning of the line.
Page Up (PgUp) - moves up one page
Page Down (PgDn) – moves down one page
End Key – moves the cursor to the end of the line.
Insert key - used to insert a character within the text.
A keyboard shortcut is a key or combination of keys providing quick access
to a particular function within a computer program.

CTRL + E - Centre paragraph
CTRL + Y - Redo the last action
CTRL + I - Make highlighted to italics
CTRL + Z - Undo the last action
CTRL + J - Justify paragraph
CTRL + PgUp - Moves cursor to the top window
CTRL + L - Left align paragraph
CTRL + Home - Moves cursor to the top of the document
CTRL + N - Create new document
CTRL + End - Moves cursor to the bottom of the document
CTRL + O - Open a document
CTRL + Enter - Insert a new Page (page break)
CTRL + P - Print a document
CTRL + 1 - Single line spacing
CTRL + R - Right align paragraph
CTRL + Shift + F - Change the Font
CTRL + S - Save a document
ALT + F4 - Close the program window
