Cramming: Its Effects as a Study Habit

Submitted by: Guese, Aris H. Submitted to: Mr. Ronald Guiyab English 2 Professor

Cramming: Its Effects as a Study Habit Introduction: In education, cramming is the practice of working intensively to absorb large volumes of informational material in short amounts of time. It is often done by students in preparation for upcoming exams. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cramming_(education)) Mary Grace, an architecture student was given plates that she has to submit a month from the day it was given. In her other class, she was also given papers that also have the same due date as her plates. She said to herself that she still has more time to do it so she did not do it immediately. She focused on non-academic things and forgot that she needed to finish her tasks. Three days before the due date, she started to have sleepless nights just to finish her tasks. A lot of college students do practice cramming. This happens when they start to leave behind their tasks until they all pile up. As a result, they have to finish them all before the due date and thats how cramming starts. Objective: -To cite reasons why students end up cramming -To know the effects of cramming

Scope and Limitations: This case study will tackle the advantages and disadvantages of cramming, reasons behind cramming and if it really helps in studying among few first year students of college of architecture in Central Colleges of the Philippines. Review of related Literature: Mastering Your Time According to Riviera Guiyab, Time management is the foundation of success (Riviera, Study and communication skills). Everyone should learn to value time because once it is wasted no one can never take it back. When it comes to finishing tasks, making a schedule can make anybody use their time efficiently and effectively. Making a schedule makes a person in a lot of ways. It helps you to: 1 Focus your attention on tasks at hand 2 Prevent or avoid unpleasant or difficult tasks 3 Eliminate the rush of working on assignments or studying for a test at the last minute 4 Regulate your study breaks 5 Engage in cumulative review

6 Make time for friends and family and; 7 Maintain a healthy lifestyle. (Riviera, Study and Comm. Skills) All of these benefits really help a person to achieve a certain plan or goal. Why do students end up cramming? These answers are based from three respondents. 1) I don't like to study, I'd rather go out, sleep or watch tv. I only study when I HAVE to or else I will fail, which is usually the day before an exam... 2) When the deadline is still out of reach, there is no sense of urgency, you only realize that you have to finish it because due date is coming. 3) Because my mind can't remember things that I studied weeks before. 4) What are the effects of cramming? Cramming is often discouraged by educators because the hurried coverage of material tends to result in poor long-term retention of material. Studying is no use if one cannot use it in the future because if you cram you only remember things for a short period of Cramming works for me.

time. Things can easily be remembered or learned when they are studied a few times over a long period of time. Cramming makes you unhealthy because you tend to sleep late just to finish a task or review for exams. A person needs at least 8 hours of sleep a day. Conclusion and Recommendations I therefore conclude that cramming is not a good study habit though many students still practice this system of studying. One should make a schedule to properly plan the tasks given. Avoid procrastination because time should never be wasted.
