Running the DWCRT

to Drill with Casing
Running the DWCRT to Drill with Casing
One of the unique benefits of technology in the sector is the continuous
innovation of various processes, which has enabled drilling and casing of a hole to
happen simultaneously, thus eliminating two time-consuming linear processes.

According to Alexandru Gomoescu, "the main purpose of Casing Drilling, or

Casing while Drilling (CwD), is to eliminate classic casing runs and isolate
formations while drilling. By using Standard casing string instead of a
conventional drill string, the drilling and casing are executed simultaneously,
section by section. Casing while Drilling is also a hazard mitigation solution,
having applicability in drilling soft, shallow sections with high borehole instability
and known losses."

Casing drilling is as a result of the introduction of the casing running tools (CRTs),
when the casing is run with top drive and CRT, what is achieved, is the ability
operate the casing string just like a drill string.
Running the DWCRT to Drill with Casing
The DWCRT is built to push, pull, rotate and reciprocate, enabling the top drive
extended control over the casing string the tool. The resultant effect on the top
drive gives it the ability to perform casing drilling, making the DWCRT a suitable
tool for the task.

The DWCRT allows the top drive to control the casing seamlessly facilitating
multifunctional abilities by simultaneously drilling and casing the hole. Making
the DWCRT, the ideal tool for casing drilling.

Stand out advantages of Casing Drilling.

The benefit of casing drilling is the elimination of linear drilling and casing
running.
Casing drilling collapses these activities into a seamless and concurrent procedure
Optimized efficiency is achieved by drilling programs thus significantly reducing
projects timeline, resulting in reduced cost of operations (cementing, smearing
effect among other).

PROVEN
CASING SOLUTIONS
DrawWorks Proven Casing Solutions
Our equipment is exported throughout the world and is recognized as the best by the world’s
largest service contractors, who frequently purchase our equipment.

You will find our equipment has been used on the largest drill ships in the Gulf of Mexico by
the major oil and gas companies. We have also designed special equipment to be used in
the Gulf of Mexico to allow the control of the annulus in deep water (>5,000 ft) while running
an inner string of drill pipe inside of a liner hanging in the riser.

DrawWorks Casing Running Tool (DWCRT) was recently deployed for a project in
Venezuela, which is the first casing running tool to be deployed in the country. One of the key
successes of the DWCRT deployment was improved efficiency by 50% - reducing casing
running to 2.5 days from a typical 4 to 5-day duration.

The Canadian climate in some regions is as cold as in Western Siberia, and thanks to the
customers operating in these areas, DWCRT is proven to run in extreme cold weather. For
instance, Hybrid Energy Services LTD has had zero issues using the tool in cold winter in
Alberta Canada and Derek Casing Services LTD has run the tools at nearly -45ºC replacing
summer grease with winter grease and using -50ºC rated seals provided by DrawWorks.

Nigeria Shelf Operations: DrawWorks DWCRT™ lands Casing and Saves Client Time and Money

CHALLENGE: Safely Run Casing to Planned Depth

Client required a system that can get their casing string to the planned depth safely.
String previously ran with other types of top drive systems posed a lot of problems for client, rig personnel, and casing
contractor. Grapples on previous top drive system deployed by contractor were slipping inside casing during make-up and
unable to achieve optimum torque value of 21,000 ft-lbs. This resulted in rigging down of that tool.

Drive System: Down-time and switching back to a conventional casing running method to complete the job both
adversely affect the bottom line. String was subsequently run to total depth but with safety issues and slower speeds. The
casing contractor got in touch with DrawWorks and adopted our new casing running technology. This one tool was sufficient
for all remaining phases of casing running.

The Tool of Choice: The mobile and light-weight DWCRT was utilized to the planned depth of 13,900 feet using 9-
5/8” casing.

Job Execution
Ran casing with the DWCRT.
Torque was monitored in real‐time using the WeCATT Wireless Torque Sub and the WinCATT Torque/Turn Monitoring Unit.

OPERATOR: CHEVERON NIGERIA LIMITED - JACK RIG: SHELF DRILLING – TRIDENT 8
CASING: TENARIS BLUE HYDRIL 13-3/8” 72# (523 WEDGE L-80)

DrawWorks, L.P. alongside with an indigenous company successfully ran the first DrawWorks Casing Running
Tool (DWCRT™) in Nigeria. The job, was on a Chevron Shelf Drilling Rig (Trident 8), to run 9,178 ft. on 13-3/8”
72# (523 Wedge L-80) casing offshore.

Based on the performance of existing CRTs in the market, Chevron hoped to accomplish running seven (7) joints
an hour. However, the DWCRT completed a minimum of nine (9) joints an hour and eventually achieved twelve
(12) joints an hour in spite of the understandable complications involved in deploying a new tool on the rig for the
first time. Furthermore, the entire run was completed without a single joint being cross-threaded or needing to be
removed, and Shelf Drilling personnel were able learn the tool very fast and run it without any issues.

With continued use, the indigenous company, Shelf Drilling and Chevron keeps improving the speed and
efficiency on every run with the DWCRT and has peaked to16 joints/hr. As a result, Chevron has decided to keep
the DWCRT on the rig full time and has requested a second tool.

The unique advantages that the DWCRT offers over other casing running tools on the market allowed this job to
be significantly more efficient than the client expected. These features include:
Customer Requests
 We are happy to meet our customers special
requirements. Here is an example of our
standard tool and two modified tools. One
customer needed to use our DWCRT in a
horizontal mining operation and requested the
ability to push casing in the well with 1 million
pounds of force. This was outside the operating
limit of our standard features but our
engineering team was able to quickly modify
the design to allow the heavy load
requirements.
 Another example is a reduced length tool that
removes the compensator feature of our
standard tool to reduce the overall length.
 DrawWorks is happy to meet these special
request for its customers. Contact us today for
your special needs.

 Customers requested higher load and torque ratings for the 5-1/2" tool.

 Options for the 5-1/2" tool now include the base 225T mandrel for
15.5-26.8#, a 255T mandrel for 15.5-23# and a 300T mandrel for
20-23#.
 The 300T Conversion Kit is rated for 30,000 ft-lbs, which
represents a 20% increase from the base mandrel’s torque rating
of 25,000 ft./lbs.

 Customers requested 6" and 6-5/8" sizes. We have added a 6” and a 6-

5/8” mandrel to meet our customer’s needs.

 Customers requested larger tool options.

 DrawWorks designed and manufactured the DWCRT1K, a larger

version of the DWCRT. This tool is rated up to 1000 ton of hoist
for 7” – 26” casing, 100,000 ft-lb torque rating all while
maintaining all of the features found in our current DWCRT.

 Customers requested non-marking inserts.

 DrawWorks understands the importance of casing integrity. This
is why we have begun developing a non-marking insert to use on
the DWCRT family.
