Activity No. 2 Problem For Independent Samples (T-Test)

1) The document presents spelling scores for 12 male and 12 female BSC students to test for a significant difference between their performances. 2) The null hypothesis is that there is no significant difference between the spelling performances of male and female students. 3) With an alpha level of 0.05 and 22 degrees of freedom, the critical t value is 2.074. The calculated t value of 0.003 is lower than the critical value, so the null hypothesis is retained.

I. Problem: Is there a significant difference between the performance of

the male and the female BSC students in spelling?
II. Hypothesis (Ho): There is no significant difference between the
performance of the male and the female BSC students in spelling
III. Level of significance: α = .05
df = n1 + n2 -2
= 12 +12 -2
= 22
t.05 = 2.074 (see the table for critical value of
t distribution. 2-tail)
IV. Decision Rule: If the computed t value is greater than the critical value
reject the null hypothesis (Ho).

V. Conclusion: Since the calculated value of 0.003 is lower than the t-critical/ value of
2. 074 at . 05 level of significance with 22 degrees of freedom the null hypothesis is
retained, which means that there is no significant difference between the scores of
male and female in spelling.
