Lab 2 - Introduction To Multisim-Bode Plotter

This document describes Lab 2 of an electronics course, which introduces students to using Multisim software to analyze electronic circuits. Specifically, it focuses on using the Bode Plotter tool to investigate the frequency response of circuits. Students are instructed to construct and analyze low-pass and band-pass filter circuits, using the Bode Plotter to measure various parameters like cutoff frequencies, bandwidth, gain, and phase response. The lab aims to provide hands-on experience using Multisim and analyzing circuits' frequency domain behavior.

Lab 2: Introduction to Multisim – Bode Plotter

Name: _Sravya Nunemunthala_________ Section: ____01___________

Partner: _ Sai Chandu Shivalingari ________ Assign frequency: ___200___ kHz

Objective: To gain experience in using Multisim software to analyze electronic circuits – with
focusing on using Bode Plotter. To create electrical and electronic circuits using
ideal and real elements, to provide the circuits with required inputs, and to use
proper instruments for measuring the circuits’ responses.

Equipment:

- Multisim software.

Procedures:

1. Construct the circuit given in figure 1. The circuit represents a first order low-pass filter.
In the following steps we will use the Bode plotter to investigate the frequency response
(magnitude and phase response) of the filter.
2. Calculate the cut off frequency fc of the filter, as explained in the pre-lab sheet.

f c=¿ kHz

3. Calculate the filter gain |G| at the assigned frequency, as explained in the pre-lab sheet:

|G| = _-7.350__dB
4. Calculate the filter phase q at the assigned frequency, as explained in the pre-lab sheet:

q = _____-64.563________ deg.

5. From the instrument toolbar, click and place Bode plotter to the design window. Also,
you can bring Bode plotter through going up to the top menu bar and clicking on
Simulate> Instruments> Bode plotter.
6. Connect the Bode plotter as shown in figure 2.

7. Double click on the Bode Plotter to open its dialog box. On the dialog box, select
Magnitude measurement, Horizontal Log scale with Final frequency (F) of 1 MHz and
Initial frequency (I) of 1 KHz, and Vertical Log scale with Final gain of 1 dB and Initial
gain (I) of -20 dB as shown below:
8. On Bode plotter, click the settings (Set…) icon and select maximum available resolution
point.
9. Run the circuit for a few moments and stop.
10. On the Bode plotter you will see similar traces as shown in the following figures:

The magnitude response of the filter

The phase response of the filter

11. The plotter has one ruler that can scan the trace to measure the gain (dB) or phase (deg)
against the frequency (Hz) at any selected point. Use the ruler to measure the following:

- The Cut-off frequency (fc) of the filter,

fc=¿ ¿

- The filter gain |G| at the assigned frequency,

¿ G∨¿ ¿
12. On the Bode Plotter, turn the mode of operation to Phase and use the ruler to measure the
following:
- The filter phase q at the assigned frequency

θ=−64.586 deg

13. Use the results of steps 2, 3, 4, 11, 12 and the equation of percentage error calculation
given below to fill the entities of the following table:

Calculated Measured Error (%) Agree Y/N

The Cut-off frequency (fc) 95.12 kHz 94.44 kHz 0.714 Y
The filter gain |G| -7.350 dB -7.348 dB 0.0272 Y
Filter phase (q ) -64.563 deg -64.586 deg -0.0356 Y

% Error=( ActualValue −Measured Value)/( ActualValue) ×100 %

Indicate whether there is good agreement between the calculated and measured values
with (Y) for yes or (N) for no under the column labeled Agree. An error of less than 10%
indicates good agreement. Note: There should be good agreement between the
calculated and measured values. If the agreement is poor, investigate the cause of
the poor agreement.

14. Construct the band-pass filter circuit and connect the Bode plotter as given in figure 3.

15. Double click on the Bode Plotter to open its dialog box and adjust its settings as indicated
in the following figure:

16. Run the circuit for a few moments and stop.

17. Measure the following parameters of the filter, as explained in the pre-lab sheet.
- The lower cut off frequency fc1:
f c 1=¿ ¿

- The higher cut off frequency fc2:

f c 2=¿ 173.988 ¿ kHz

- The filter bandwidth (BW) based on -3dB criterion:

BW =¿ −30.251¿ kHz

18. The frequency of the pass-band mid-point (fm.p) is defined as:

f (m . p )=(f c 1+ f c 2/2) Hz
19. The mid-point frequency is:
f (m . p )=¿ ¿

20. On the Bode plotter, use the magnitude response to measure the filter gain at the mid-
point frequency |G(fm.p)|:
¿ G( f (m . p))∨¿¿ −3.416¿ dB
21. When finished, unplug all equipment and return equipment not stored on the bench to the
instructor. Clean your work area.
22. Do not leave the lab until you are sure you understand the requirements and have the
data to complete the work in the Observation and Conclusion sections.

Conclusion:

A formal Lab Report is not required for this lab. Observations and answers to questions are to be
recorded above and the complete lab handed in to be graded. Your responses must be legible to
be marked.

Your instructor may choose to mark the lab completely during the lab session.
