What I Need to Know

A flowchart is a diagram that uses graphic symbols to show the sequence of


steps and decisions needed to perform a process.

After reading this module, the learners should be able to:


LO 2. Interpret technical drawing (TLE_ICTAN9-12ID-Ih-2)
2.1 Identify the basic symbols used in flow charting;
2.2 Interpret the symbols used in flow charting; and
2.3 Create a flowchart that depicts a simple scenario.

In going through the module, you have to extend your patience in


understanding, analyzing what you are reading. Follow the directions and/or
instructions in the activities. Answer the entire given test and exercises
carefully. Comply the required activities provided.

What is it?

Types of Flowchart

1. Linear - it is a diagram that displays the sequence of work steps that


makeup a process.
2. Deployment Flowchart - it shows the actual process flow and
identifies the people or groups involved at each step.
3. Opportunity Flowchart - it the variations of the basic linear type.

BASIC FLOWCHART SYMBOLS

The symbols shown below are the commonly used symbols in flowcharts:
1. Oval. It indicates both the beginning point and the ending point of a
process.

2. Rectangle. It represents an individual task or action in the process.

3. Diamond. A diamond shows a decision point such as yes or no.

4. Arrows. It is use to guide the viewer on the direction of the process which
means that it emphasizes the next step of the process.

5. Document. It is the data that can be read by people such as printed output.

Figure A shows the following:
• The Oval symbol shows the start and end of the process where the group
started with a suggested design and end with the acceptable design.
• The rectangle symbol shows the task or action in the process such as
discussion of idea, accepting or rejecting the idea, reviewing the created
design, and the submission or revision of the created design.
• The diamond symbol shows a decision point where the group member
decides if the idea is good and if the design is acceptable. As you can
observe, the diamond shows a decision that is answerable by yes or no.
• The arrow symbol in the figure shows the direction of the next step in the
process.
• The document symbol shows the creation of the actual design by drawing
the agreed design which can produce a printed output.
