How can we make our communication be effective or more effective?
In this module you will gain knowledge on the various types of speech context. Information
sheet will be provided for the purpose of acquiring theories and concepts in speech
communication, pretest at the same time will be given to assess learners’ prior knowledge with the
competency and to evaluate the acquired theories and concepts of learners, and posttest will be
given at the end of the module.
All these learning materials will help you to become an effective or more effective
communicator because through them, you will be able to distinguish which types of conversation
are acceptable in specific types of social conditioning. If you are able to grasp and understand
these forms of contexts, then you will be able to master all forms of not only verbal but also non-
verbal exchanges of information.

Speech Context
Speech Context refers to the purpose of the speech why you are giving the speech. It also
refers to the situation or environment and the circumstances in which communication occurs.
Why is Speech Context important?
Context is critical , because it tells you the receiver what importace to place on something
what assumptions to draw or (or not) about what is being communicated and most importantly, it
puts meaning into the message.
TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXTS
1. INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
This refers to communication that happens when you communicate with yourself. In this type
of communication, you mentally process information that

Example: You spent the night thinking and analyzing why a student from the other class talked to
you on the way home and you decided it probably meant nothing.
2. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION-
This refers to communication between and among people and establishes personal
relationship between and among them.
Interpersonal Communication is categorized into the following forms:
A. Dyad Communication
This category involves an exchange of message between two people.
Example:
You offered feedback on the speech performance of your classmate.
You provided comfort to a friend who was feeling down.

B. Small Group
This category involves at least three but not more than ten people engaging in a face-to-
face interaction working to achieve a desired goal
Example:
You are participating in an organizational meeting which aims to address the concerns of your
fellow students.
You are having a meeting with your group mate on how to finished your assigned task.
3.PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
This type of communication refers to communication that requires you to deliver or send the
message before or in front of a group.
The channels are more exaggerated
The voice is louder and the gesture are more expansive because the audience is bigger.
Example:
A priest delivering his homily to the student body during school mass.
A speaker giving her lecture during symposium.

4. MASS COMMUNICATION
This refers to communication that takes place through television, radio, newspapers,
magazines books, billboards, internet, and other types of media.
Example:
You are a student journalist articulating your stand on current issues through the school’s
newspaper.
