WHAT IS A SURVEY
A Survey Is A Research Method Used For Collecting Data From A Predefined Group Of Respondents To Gain
Information And Insights Into Various Topics Of Interest. They Can Have Multiple Purposes, And Researchers Can
Conduct It In Many Ways Depending On The Methodology Chosen And The Study’s Goal.

TYPES OF SUREY
1. Descriptive Survey
“A descriptive survey attempts to picture or document current conditions or attitudes that is, to describe what exists
at the moment”
Examples:

2. Analytical Surveys
“An analytical survey attempts to describe and explain WHY certain situations exist. Here we examine two, or more
variable to test our research hypothesis”
Examples:
-style effects the TV viewing habits.

METHODS OF SURVEY

1) MAILED QUESTIONNAIRE.
o It is one of the most important data collection survey method.
o Mail survey involves sending a cover letter and a questionnaire to a specific person .

Advantages
o Low cost.
o Reduction in biasing errors.
o Greater anonymity.
o Accessibility.
o Less time & trained staff .
Disadvantages
o Requires simple questions
o No probing opportunity.
o No control over WHO fills?
o Low response rate.

2) Personal interview.
o Interviewing is a form of questioning characterized by the fact that it employs verbal questioning.
o Together with the questionnaire, interviews make up the survey method,
o which is one of the most popular technique of data collection.

Advantages
o Flexibility in questioning.
o Control over the interview situation.
o High response rate.
o Collection of supplement data.
Disadvantages
o Higher cost
o Interviewer bias.
o Respondent’s hesitation on sensitive topics.
o Greater staff requirement.

3) Telephone interview.
o Telephone interview demonstrates the same structural characteristics as standard interviewing technique,
except that it is conducted by telephone.
Advantages
o Moderate cost.
o time consumption.
o Higher response rate.
o Quality …(Supervision , Recording)
Disadvantages
o Hesitation to discuss sensitive topics.
o The “Broken-Off” interviews.
o No supplement information.
